What can you do with a thousand words?
Hi Fanprosers! In a few days, I’ll be away on vacation for a bit, so I wanted to run a Challenge while I’m gone.
Despite the craze around Photocards, Fanprose is first and foremost a platform for writers and readers to share our love and passion for fanfiction in a safe, cozy, and supportive space. And while we’re all so wonderfully different and unique from one another in terms of writing styles and our tastes vary so drastically, storytelling—to me—is ultimately about the emotions we feel as humans when we read the words on a page. And in a world where we’re all separated by screens of blue light thousands of miles away from each other, words are all we have to connect with one another. Through words we laugh, bond, cry, and sometimes even fight. Through words we form friendships, create memories, build communities, and grow together.
So today, I challenge you!
In only 1,000 words, how much can you make a reader feel?
Rules & Guidelines
Submit a story (or chapter) that is approximately 1,000 words.
Your story does not need to be newly written for this Challenge.
The genre and characters are completely up to you!
You will have until the end of May to submit, so don’t rush! Low wordcount does not mean quick and easy—in fact, it’s quite the opposite! Choose your words carefully, you don’t have that many to spare.
Submissions will be open early, so readers may follow along before the Challenge ends.
Writers of all skill levels are invited to participate! Please don’t be shy!
AI-generated stories will be disqualified from this challenge—it’s only 1,000 words and I want to feel things, please write it yourself.
Prizes
I will choose four winners who made me feel the most of the following emotions: 😂 ☺️ 😭 😳
A fifth winner will be chosen based on the community votes as their favorite submission.
Readers will be allowed to vote up to 3 participants.
All five winners will receive any Photocard of their choice from the Gallery from any tier aside from Celestial (because hey—we may be writing first, b-but the pocas…)
This Challenge is about honing your craft and pushing your limits as a writer; on being able to be efficient with your words while still drawing out emotions from readers. But most importantly, I hope you have fun and learn something about yourself, about writing, and about other authors along the way!

Comments from readers: "I got to attend a masterclass in writing and feel like I read a lifetime." ✦ "It's poetic and beautiful more than anything.." ✦ "I just read a piece that I feel I'd choose to analyze in English class. Something to write a paper about. In the best way possible, I feel so impossibly outclassed." ✦ "this ached in the best way possible."
