I walk you through my pre production document layout and structure
Ad nauseam
Since on my first blog post about writing got so many comments about “how I didn’t go into depth enough” here’s the Ad naus level guide.
Since I am starting a new longer series and need to do pre production before I start it I am going to walk you through how I approach the “pre production process” because this may help writers trying to really find, organize, and potentially fix their ideas.
Okay first thing first you are going to need a place to store notes. Some people use notebooks or apps. My preferred system is an app called Notion, because I can use it on my phone and it has good color coordination features.
The first step before anything else for me is coming up with a title after that I create the document with the title then I add the following main sections
Identity
Main Characters
Side characters
World building
After that I break down each main section into subsections you can rename them to taste but it should kinda look something like this.
Identity should have
Spark
Tone
Theme
Motif
Genre
Main characters should have
Protagonist(s)
Antagonist(s)
Side characters should have
Allies
Obstacles
Diplomats
World building should have
Objects of interest
Intricacies of the present
World’s past
World’s role
Unique twist
The order doesn’t matter for the sub sections and can be reorganized to tase however you need the main sections because they kind of build on top of each other.
