Chaeyoung leaned back on her seat again, holding an ice pack over her head as she blankly stared at the police officer that was in her office that day. She was, in a way, forced to go over some files with regards to the arrest of Lee Yeongcheol.
She really didn’t want to deal with this. She was hoping that after giving Jeongyeon and Dahyun a day off, she would have one for herself. Even thought of seeing Mina if the woman allowed it.
She sighed. If the commissioner would be the one to come here himself, or even invite her to the station, then she would have agreed in a heartbeat. But since he was busy doing other things, he sent another lackey to do his work. If only he sent Jihyo instead, then it would definitely be more tolerable.
But this boring man, going through each line of every document he had in his hand, reading each line slowly and in the unliveliest voice she had ever heard, made her wish she could grab him by the neck and throw him outside the window. Or maybe bring him downstairs for a little fun. The idea made her brow twitch with curiosity.
“Are you following Miss Son?” he asked, looking up at her.
The honorific made her brow twitch again. She hated being called that, but she knew she had to tolerate this person since she did owe the commissioner for helping her out with the mission. So she looked back at him in a bland expression and nodded.
“Yes, officer.”
She just needed to get this over and done with, so she didn’t have to see him again.
Suddenly there was a knock on her door. She was hoping someone would open it for her but when she heard the knocking again, she looked up and realized that none of her men were inside the office with her.
Chaeyoung groaned. “Hold that thought, officer.” She lazily pried herself off from her chair, throwing the ice pack on the table and then trudged towards the door.
She swung the door open and was a bit surprised to see Jeongyeon, but she slammed the door shut and turned around. Jeongyeon sighed loudly and opened the door again.
“Boss—“
Chaeyoung stopped and turned back to look at her. “What? I’m busy.”
Jeongyeon rolled her eyes and then sighed, trying to keep her cool. “I’m aware. And I know you probably want to rest especially with what happened yesterday but—“
Chaeyoung groaned and walked closer to Jeongyeon. “But what, Jeongyeon? I have the police on my ass right now because they need to write up reports or some shit and it’s been fucking annoying that they’re asking to come here. I even got one of their fucking lackeys in my office right now.” She made sure to say all of that out loud, making the officer sitting down whip his head at her. Then she narrowed her eyes at her right-hand man. “Isn’t it your day off today?”
“Yes it is. And yes, I am aware of this.” Jeongyeon looked a bit desperate to talk to her, but she kept her straight face and put both hands out. “I’m not asking now, now. I’m just saying—“
“I can always wait?“ A soft voice came from behind Jeongyeon. Chaeyoung’s eyes went wide when she instantly recognized it, she quickly pushed Jeongyeon to the side and felt the air leave her lungs when she was face to face with Mina again.
God, she was still beautiful even after all this time. Chaeyoung’s heart started beating faster.
“Mina?” She blinked wildly then she whipped her head at Jeongyeon. “What is she doing here?”
“I wanted to talk to you,” Mina answered instead, in the softest voice ever and it made Chaeyoung’s heart swell ten times more.
“O-of course.” Then she looked back at the officer inside her office and then grabbed Mina’s hand gently. “Wait here, please don’t go. Just wait.” She gingerly let it go and then entered her office again quickly, walking straight to the officer that was waiting. “You can go now.”
“W-what? But we're not done here,” He said, showing her the rest of the papers that he still had in his hands.
Chaeyoung rubbed the brim of her nose and felt a little more impatient. She let out a deep breath and looked at him. “Then let’s reschedule.”
He furrowed his brows at her. “What? The commissioner said that we need this report done—“
“And the commissioner can fucking wait. If anything you guys should be thankful I’m even letting a fucker like you inside my territory,” Chaeyoung said, grabbing his collar and pulling his face closer to hers. “So either we reschedule, or I’ll drag your ass out of here.” Then she released him, glaring at him until he finally resigned and started packing up.
“Fine! But when we decide on another schedule you are not allowed to reschedule it at the last minute.” Then he scoffed. “I don’t get how the commissioner and Detective Park deals with you people.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll call the commissioner when I’m free again.” She waved him off. Once he stood up, everything he had laid out already kept inside his briefcase, she looked at Jeongyeon by the door and pointed at him. “Please escort him out.”
Jeongyeon bowed at her and then waited for the disgruntled officer to leave the office. Before they left, Jeongyeon said a couple of words to Mina and the woman stepped inside the room, closing the door slowly behind her.
Chaeyoung couldn’t hold in what she was feeling, she immediately removed her blazer, threw it on her table and walked towards Mina until they were only a couple of feet away from each other.
“Do you want to sit down?”
“Was that really necessary? It sounded important.” She didn’t move but looked at her with big eyes and that made Chaeyoung blush, she couldn’t believe how easily she was swooned by this woman.
Chaeyoung looked away, scratching the side of her face. “Clearly, you’re more important to me.”
She noticed how Mina’s cheeks were turning red and that made her a bit hopeful. “...You really just say whatever you want, don’t you?”
“I have nothing to hide from you, Mina.” She shrugged at her.
“Does that include not telling me the real reason why your men have been stalking me for months? You even got an undercover cop to play as my neighbor?” Mina asked but this time, to Chaeyoung’s relief, her tone wasn’t angry. “All because I was a target?”
“Yes,” Chaeyoung answered immediately. She knew there was no use to beat around the bush like last time. Mina deserved to know the truth.
“Why did you hide it from me?”
“If I told you everything the first time, would you have taken all the information so easily?” Chaeyoung answered back playfully. It had been a while since they last saw each other and her being in a bad mood would definitely ruin things. So she had to explain all of this calmly. “You were skeptical about us and about me from the start. I was aiming to have this be done subtly so it wouldn’t disrupt your everyday activities. I wanted you to still feel safe despite it, but obviously that failed.”
Mina was quiet for a moment, Chaeyoung was hoping that this was her way of processing things. But that made her replay the things she just said in her head and started to panic when she thought it did sound like she was pissed.
So she held out her hands at Mina and tried to change the tone of her voice. “But you’re safe now. No one will bother you anymore—“
“Why?” Mina asked, her eyes looking straight at her.
“Why what?” Chaeyoung was trying not to blush again.
Mina looked down at her feet, playing with the sleeves of her sweater. “Why did you do all of this for me?”
“Because—” Was Chaeyoung going to say it again? But then again, what was there to lose at this point? She took Mina’s hand; she felt her heart was going to spill when Mina didn’t pull away like last time. “Because I love you, that’s why,” she said in the gentlest way possible, looking up at Mina and then let out a breath. “And please don’t run. I mean, you really can’t but please hear me out this time.”
Mina was definitely blushing. She nodded her head and looked away again. “Okay.”
There were so many emotions flowing through her chest. She felt like she was dreaming and needed to pinch herself to see if it was real. But the feeling of having Mina’s soft and perfect hands on hers again made her heart soar. It definitely felt real.
Chaeyoung snapped out of it and tugged on her hand gently. “Take a seat for me, please?” She asked while pointing at the couch. The two walked over and made Mina sit down first while she sat on the coffee table right in front of her. “I want to explain everything to you. But I know the police have informed you of the real story. I just want you to hear it from me as well.” She mashed her lips into a thin line and rotated her hand in circles. “You know, in my own explanation.”
Mina smiled and nodded. “I’m listening.”
Chaeyoung’s heartbeat quickened again when she saw that smile. It was like falling in love for the first time and she didn’t know this feeling too well, so it took her by surprise.
But she composed herself and took a deep breath again, feeling more nervous than she was yesterday before she had to meet Yeongcheol.
