He has always liked her, she only ever saw him as a kid. As the lines between them start to blur and dormant feelings start to awaken, will the way she sees him change or is it already set in stone?
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
“Argh what the fuck is it morning already?” you mutter as you pick up your phone to dismiss the alarm. Why the fuck do I even have an alarm set? I don’t have classes today.

Single uncle🧍♂️
Ahn Jae-Hyeon
Are you up? Don’t forget you promised to come with me to pick your cousin up from the airport at 10:30 this morning.
7:32
Ugh fuck that’s today? I guess that’s why I have that alarm set. And what’s with the whole government name? Jesus Christ.
Yes uncle I’m up. What time are we leaving again? 7:32
Single uncle🧍♂️
We leave at 8:30 sharp, there’s some roads under construction on the way to the airport and I don’t want to keep your cousin waiting.
7:32
Okay uncle, I’ll get ready now. Just honk or text when you’re outside.
7:33
You quickly get yourself ready as your uncle is going to be arriving soon. As you get done getting ready, you decide to wait for your uncle by drinking some tea while scrolling through reddit. You read about the latest gaming news, some random nonsense, and a guy asking if he was the asshole (he was). As the clock strikes 8:30, you get up from the couch and head out to your uncle’s car.
“Good morning Uncle” you say as you enter the car. “Good morning kid, for a minute there I thought you were gonna leave me hanging” he says chuckling a little.
“To be honest I almost did,” you replied as you yawned, sleepiness kicking back in. “I’m going to sleep for a while uncle, just wake me up when we’re near the airport”. As your consciousness slowly drift away, the last thing you see is a sign on the side of the road that said “ROAD WORK AHEAD” (yeah I sure hope it does).
I jolt awake at the sensation of someone tapping my shoulder. “Hey sleepyhead wake up, we’re almost there.”
“Mmm…. that was fast.” I say groggily as I stretch out my arms and legs. “Let’s go find a parking spot and go straight to the arrivals”. He says as he gets a parking ticket from the automated machine.
After finding a seat at the arrivals area, you take a look at your watch as it says 10:35. Your uncle breaks the silence as he says “So, how are you feeling about these next couple of weeks kid? Seeing our family members after years of them not coming back home. And of course, the reason they are all coming home, your sister’s wedding next week. You must be ecstatic.”
“Of course! I’m very excited for the next couple of weeks, I just have to study for a quiz tomorrow, then I’m chilling”, you say while smiling.
“That’s nice to hear. How is Yujin? She must be the feeling the opposite of you now that the wedding is a few days away”.
“Oh tell me about it, she’s been on edge these last few days and I’m sure it’s just gonna get worse as the wedding gets closer. She’s been snapping at everyone other than grandma. Thankfully I’m at school majority of the time so I don’t get snapped at too often.”
“Yeah that tracks,” he says while chuckling, “she’s been a little controlling ever since you guys were kids. Why’d she even hire a wedding coordinator anyway if she refuses to let go of control? But you know, at least we can be sure that the wedding’s gonna turn out great knowing that she’s hands on with it.”
You nod in agreement with your uncle. “Yeah that wedding’s gonna be soooo fucking great. And besides, she isn’t carrying the burden alone anyways, she has her bridesmaids helping her, and of course, her bestfriend and maid of honor is always by her side,” you add as a big smile develops on your face.
Okay now why is there a stupid smile on your face right now? Well it’s all thanks to her. Yes, your sister’s best friend: Gaeul, who you’ve always had a little crush on ever since you were a kid. Really? A little? Do you actually believe that? Okay okay, maybe, just maybe you are absolutely smitten and head over heels about her, but I mean, who wouldn’t be? With her angel-like personality and heavenly looks to come with it, you’d be an idiot not to fall for her. Yep, safe to say you’ve fallen for her and there’s no coming back.
Your uncle arches his eyebrows in confusion at the sight of your big smile as your thoughts trail off into the distance. “What’s got you smiling like that all of a sudden?”
“…….”
“Hey kid!” Your uncle snaps his fingers in front of your face to end your day dream. “Hmm, what? What’s up?” You say as you shake your head, wiping that big smile off your face.
“Huh? What do you mean ‘What’s up?’ you were the one who suddenly stopped while we were talking! You were telling me about how your sister’s friends help her with the wedding’s final touches but then you suddenly trailed off mid sentence when you mentioned her best friend, Gaeul was it? Wait, isn’t that the girl you had a crush on when you were a kid?”
“What?! Who told you that? That’s not- I don’t- I mean I didn’t have a crush on her back then!” you manage to get out as you scramble your brain for a response.
“Oh please, with that reaction, I think it’s safe to say that you STILL have a crush on her.” Your uncle says as he grins. Realizing you played right into his trap, you just give up and come out with the truth. “Ugh fine, there’s no point in denying it to you I guess, you were always able to read me like a book ever since I was a kid, how and when did you know?”
“Oh come on kid, I’m surprised I was the only one that knows. You haven’t been entirely slick with it you know. Every time they were at your house I would catch you staring at her for 10-15 minutes at a time.”
“…….Huh, didn’t know I was that obvious, good thing you were the only one who noticed huh Uncle? I wouldn’t be able to live it down if someone else, especially eomma or noona were the ones who noticed it.”
“Don’t sweat it kid, I only noticed it because I also went through my fair share of crushes when I was at that age, so of course I’d know if my most handsome nephew is has a crush.”
“Thanks Uncle. And tone down the flattery please, if only you can flatter women as well as you flatter me, maybe you’d have a wife, or at the very least a girlfriend right now.” You say as you try to stifle a laugh, but ending up bursting in laughter making the other people around you look.
“You brat! I’m not that old! Come here!” Your uncle says as he tries to grab you. As you manage to avoid his “attacks” you end up running in the open floor. As you continue laughing by yourself, you look back to see if your uncle is following you.
THUD
You look up as you look at the person you bumped into. “Oh shit I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to— Daniel Hyung! You’re here!” you say as you realize the person you bumped into is your cousin.
“Jae-Hyeon? It IS you! Why were you running around the airport?” your cousin says, slightly confused.
“Oh nothing, I just teased uncle Jun about the lack of women in his life, and now he’s out to get me” you say while trying to catch your breath.
“Still a menace I see, shouldn’t you change now that you’re about to graduate college?” he says.
“Yeah yeah I know, but where’s the fun in that? Anyways, good to see you Hyung! Glad you can make it. Come on, Uncle Jun is this way.”

BRIDEZILLA🦖🔥
Where are you?
Why aren’t you in your room?
You have no classes today right?
I need someone to lift some heavy boxes so we can get started with the souvenirs and dad just went to work.
It’s just me and my friends in the house right now, we have no one to do the heavy lifting.
11:58 a.m.
On the way back from the airport, me and Jun uncle went to fetch Daniel hyung.
Probably be home in 30 minutes, tops.
11:58 a.m.
BRIDEZILLA🦖🔥
Ugh couldn’t he have just went on his own? Why’d he have to bring you with him?
Just fucking hurry home, I’m gonna have to punch someone if we don’t get started with these souvenir bags soon.
11:58 a.m.
Okay noona, I’m gonna tell uncle to step on it. And maybe break some traffic rules along the way.11:58 a.m.
BRIDEZILLA🦖🔥
That’s my boy, stay safe. Love you.
11:59 a.m.
Love you too noona. Please don’t punch anyone.
11:59 a.m.
“I think you better drive faster uncle, she’s already threatened to punch someone if I’m not home in 30 minutes.” you say to your uncle as you put down your phone.
“Bye uncle! Just drop that idiot off at Auntie’s house, he can take care of him self from there. Stay safe!” you say as you get out the car, moving quickly as you open the gate your house.
“You too kid, stay safe and make sure your sister doesn’t kill anyone before the wedding!” he says as he starts to drive away.
As you enter the gate you immediately notice the 6 big boxes outside. You nudge one box with your foot and was instantly able to tell that it was indeed fucking heavy. Lifting the boxes was not going to be that hard for you as you diligently go to the gym, but repeating it six times will definitely pose a problem for you. You groan as you decide to pick up one box before making your way to the slightly open front door. As you get closer to the house, your sister’s voice gets louder and louder and you just pray that she didn’t actually punch someone while you were away.
“I’m here!” you say as you kick the front door open as you immediately look for your sister. “Where should I put this?” you ask to the room. “You can put it beside the table, same with the other boxes please, thank you.” someone out of your vision says.
“Hello noonas, how’s everything go-” you try to ask them before getting immediately interrupted by Yujin screaming “Less talk, more carrying! You got five more boxes to go! Move! Move! Move!” Jesus Christ she’s getting worse everyday, you think as you make your way back outside to bring the rest of the boxes inside the house. You are gassed by the time you set down the 5th box. Fucking hell what’s even in these boxes, bricks? Is she planning to give away bricks as her souvenir?
As you try to wipe your sweat with the back of your hand and make your way back outside to get the last box, someone stood in your way holding out a towel and a cold glass of water. And it’s not just someone , it’s her.
The girl of your dreams, Gaeul, right in front of you, holding out a glass of water and a towel, like it was the most normal thing to do in the world. Because to her, it is, she noticed you getting tired and decided you needed water before you passed out from exhaustion. She always does this, she notices the small things first before anyone does, just one of the traits that you love about her. It might mean nothing to her, but it means everything to you, every time she does things like this to you, your heart immediately goes into overdrive and beats as fast as it can.
“Hello? Earth to Jae-Hyeon? Are you there?” she says as she waves her hand in front of your face.
“O-Oh noona! Thank you for the towel and water, I really needed it.” you say as you snap out of your day dream and back to reality, feeling the heat creep up your neck.
“What were you even thinking about while you were spacing out?” she asks with a curious look on her face.
“N-nothing! I was just a little light headed because of all the lifting, that’s all.” you say as you try to deflect.
“Oh okay, don’t push yourself too hard, okay? And don’t be scared of Yujin snapping at you, I’ll protect you from her.” she says with a smile.
God that smile, that fucking smile is the kind of smile that men go to war for.
If your ears weren’t red before, they were definitely red now, you just hope she doesn’t notice it. “Thank you noona, and don’t worry, it’s the last box anyway. Nothing I couldn’t handle.” you proudly say as you flash her a smile of your own.
“Aigoo look at my little boy all grown up now, lifting up heavy boxes for his noonas.” she says as she reaches up to pinch your cheeks.
You tense up for a moment at the sudden sensation of her pinching your cheeks before you were able to say “S-stop noona, I’m not a kid anymore, I’ve been taller than you for years now.” you say in a voice softer than your usual one.
“Oh I know… I just miss being able to pinch those cheeks without you asking me to stop, oh how time flies. Soon after you graduate and get yourself a girlfriend you’re gonna forget about me and I won’t even be able to get near you anymore.” she says as she pouts.

FUCK SHE’S SO CUTE WHEN SHE POUTS I’M GONNA LOSE MY MIND. What was she talking about again? Oh right.
“Come on noona, I won’t forget about you, promise. I’d still be the dumb little kid no matter what.” you say as you look directly at her eyes that you would often get lost in.
“You mean that Hyeonnie? Noona’s gonna be mad if you break that promise.” she says, still slightly pouting.
“Yes noona one hundred percent, I promise I won’t forget you, whatever happens in the future.” the statement turns her pout into that heavenly smile once again.
“Okay, then I also promise to not forget you too, Hyeonnie, whatever happens in the future.” she says, smiling up at you with her hands behind her back.
God she looks so fucking adorable. My heart’s gonna explode if I don’t stop talking to her right now.
“Okay noona, I’m going to get the last box now. Thank you for the towel and water again, you’re the best.” you say as you make your way to the sixth box.
“Anytime, Hyeonnie” she says as she makes her way back to the couch.
As you make your way to the last box, your mind can’t help but wonder, Is she ever gonna see me more than a little brother? I mean, at this point I’d honestly take being friend-zoned over being seen as just a little kid.
The moment you got out of the front door, another small girl seemingly materialized right beside you, Leeseo. The youngest in their circle of friends. Your best friend and fellow menace to society. The two of you were classmates from middle school up until highschool. Both of you even go to the same university. Oh, and she’s also the only one who knows about your huge crush on Gaeul (well her and Uncle Jun now I suppose). Yep, safe to say you two are close.
“I saw that,” she says, bumping your shoulder with hers.
“You saw what exactly?” you reply, trying to act dumb.
“Oh please. You know exactly what I’m talking about.”
“Ugh fine. How did you even see that? I didn’t see you around the house earlier. You stalking me now?” you tease.
“Don’t flatter your self, Hyeonnie~, you know I’ve been rooting for you and unnie to get together ever since we were in high school. Of course I have to see how it all unravels. I’m going to proudly say that I was the only one who knew it was gonna happen before it actually did.” she says smugly.
“How many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?” you say, widening your eyes.
“What? That’s what unnie calls you all the time, why is it a problem when I say it?” she teases.
“Well it sounds cute and sweet when it comes from her! When you do, it just makes me want to throw up.” you say, side-eyeing her.
She rolls her eyes at your statement, “Anyways, what were you and unnie talking about?” she adds.
“Oh, nothing really,” you say, trying to avoid the topic.
“Nothing? Really? Do you really expect me to believe that? Your cheeks are still red, by the way.” she insisted.
“Fine, if you have to know everything that goes on in my life. She just told me I should take it easy and rest whenever I need. And that I don’t need to worry so much about Yujin noona snapping at me because she’d be there to defend me.” I answered.
“Uh huh, and then?” she says, crossing her arms.
“The fuck you mean ‘and then?’ that’s all she said!” I protested.
“Mhm. I know you’re hiding something, just spill it!” she pushes.
“Ugh you’re so annoying, how do you even know I was hiding something?”
“News flash dumbass, we’ve been best friends for what, twelve years now? I’ve basically got all you tells memorized by now. And aren’t you supposed to be used to me being annoying by now?”
That does make sense. “And I know all of yours. Isn’t it weird that we know each other so well? I swear we must’ve been conjoined twins or something in our past lives (great movie btw).”
“Yeah yeah we talked about that tons of times before. And don’t try to change the subject! Just cut to the chase and tell me what else you guys talked about.” she hissed.
“Oh right. Well right after she said she’d be there to protect me from noona, I said she didn’t have to worry too much and I can handle it since it’s the last box anyway. She then squished my cheeks and said something about how grown up I am now. Then I tried to hide my reddening cheeks as I told her that I’m not a kid anymore.” you say as you trail off once again, reminiscing about the feeling of her hands on your cheeks.
“And then? Go on man! I don’t wanna get caught slacking off!” she says clapping her hands in front of your face.
“Oh sorry,” you say still grinning and touching your cheeks like an idiot. “Then she said she misses the days where she could squish my cheeks and I’d just let her without any resistance. And that I’ll probably forget about her once I graduate and get my self a girlfriend. Then she pouted while looking directly at my eyes. It’s a miracle I didn’t melt right there.”
“Damn, unnie said that? That’s… interesting. What’d you say to her?” she asks.
“Well I said that I’ll never forget her whatever happens in the future. Then she smiled and said the same thing.” you say as a big smile on your face forms while you think of her words.
“Woah… how are you this calm about it?” she asks, a little thrown off. “Isn’t that… kind of a big deal? I mean, didn’t you guys basically confess your feelings towards each other?”
“What? How did you get that from what I said? I mean of course everything that I said was real, but isn’t it obvious that she only sees me as a little brother? I mean, she literally squished my cheeks like I was a kid, why else would she do that?”
“Hmmm you do make a point. But I don’t know, I feel like—
“LEE HYUNSEO!!! WHERE HAVE YOU GONE OFF TO NOW?” she gets interrupted as you both hear Yujin calling her name.”
“Oh shit. I’m in so much trouble, let’s continue this later, kay?” she says with a big smile as she heads toward the sound of your sister yelling orders. This is exciting, I have a feeling my favorite ship is finally sailing, she thought to herself.
Later that night, while studying for your quiz, your phone buzzed as you receive text from Leeseo.
annoying tiger cub🐯
Soooo, do you have time to talk about it now or are you busy talking to your books?
22:43
What is there to talk about? I swear I already told you everything we talked about.
22:43
annoying tiger cub🐯
I know idiot. That’s not what I’m talking about.
22:43
Then what are you talking about?
22:43
annoying tiger cub🐯
I told you! I genuinely think there’s a chance that Gaeul unnie likes you back!
Now that I think about it, I did overhear Rei unnie teasing Gaeul unnie about a crush the other day.
At the time I thought I just misheard her, but now that the dots are connecting, I think I heard right.
+ I have been noticing the way she looks at you lately, it’s… different to say the least.

Are you really quoting the avengers right now? Seriously?
You know, I was going to do everything in my power these next three days to make sure you two get together before or at least on the wedding.
But you pissed me off so I’m not gonna do it anymore.
22:45
NO NO NO PLEASE I PROMISE I’LL BE BETTER!
But I mean, come on. I’ve been showing her signs that I like her since we were in high school. What makes you think something changed recently?
22:45
annoying tiger cub🐯
Signs? What signs? Is getting red, flustered, and blushing all at the same time when she squishes your cheeks considered a sign now?
And regarding what makes me think something changed… I can’t really explain it, but my gut is telling me that she likes you too.
And you know my gut’s rarely wrong.
Remember when we were at the mall last month and you made me choose between the last three boxes of Pokémon’s latest expansion set?
And the box I ended up choosing had the card you wanted?
22:46
Of course! How could I forget. My boy Greninja came home that day, I still can’t believe I pulled the SAR.

Isn’t he beautiful?😍
22:47
annoying tiger cub🐯
God you’re so annoying to talk to. Are you done nerding out?
Is that seriously what you got from what I said?
22:47
What exactly do you want me to do with what you said?
22:47
annoying tiger cub🐯
Just do it, dude. I’m telling you, she has feelings for you too. It’s just a matter of someone actually making the first move.
I want you to trust me and just go with whatever I say and tell you to do these next few days.
22:47
That sounds dangerous… Especially coming from you
So basically you’re saying that you will wingman for me?
22:48
annoying tiger cub🐯
Wing woman.
Exactly.
But because you’re annoying, I won’t do it for free any more.
22:48
Ugh fine, what’s it gonna cost me this time?
22:48
annoying tiger cub🐯
Hmm
You have to buy me sweets, daily, for the rest of the year.
22:49
The fuck? That doesn’t seem fair. What if it doesn’t work out?
22:49
annoying tiger cub🐯
Well it definitely won’t work out with that attitude.
Fine, the payment is contingent with you and Gaeul unnie actually getting together.
Sound fair to you now? Do we have a deal?
22:50
Sure, that sounds fair.
I guess.
You have a deal.
The fate of my future is counting on you.
22:50
annoying tiger cub🐯
Oh please, you know I’m gonna make sure this ship sails.
With the power of sweets and friendship, I will make it happen.
22:50
God we are so similar to each other it scares me sometimes.
Anyway, I gotta get back to studying so I can finally relax and actually prepare for the wedding.

“I’m home!” you shout as you get back from the university, holding bags of snacks and drinks.
“Oh good you brought snacks!” Wonyoung says from the living room.
“Of course. I don’t want my favorite noonas to get hungry, especially when I know how hard my sister makes you work.” you say, setting the bags down at the kitchen counter.
“Wow, when did you become such a sweet talker? Rei teases. “Leeseo, you sure this guy isn’t getting mobbed at your university? I’m sure almost every girl wants a piece of him if he’s like this all the time!” Rei says as she shoots a sideways glance towards Gaeul.
Just beside her, Gaeul who was working on something, suddenly tensed up and froze. Why does that… bother me? Gaeul thinks to herself as she processes what Rei said. It’s probably nothing, maybe I’m just being protective. She attempts to shake it off, wanting to focus at the task on hand.
“I’m not MAKING them do anything! They’re doing everything out of their own volition because they love me so much!” your sister retorts.
“Sure sure, keep telling yourself that sis.” you say, laughing. “So, what can I do to help?” you ask.
“Actually, we need someone to pick up the remaining dresses and suits from the tailor. You can take Leeseo with you.” Yujin says.
“Actually unnie, I could use some rest. I twisted my ankle yesterday remember? Gaeul unnie can go with him though! I’m sure she’d be okay with it.” Leeseo says, subtly winking at you.
“Oh that’s right, sorry.” Yujin says quickly. “So, Gaeul do you want to go with him or—”
“I’LL DO IT!” Gaeul answers a little too quick and a little too loud. ehem ehem “I mean, sure, I’ll do it. I wanted to get out of the house anyway.” she adds.
Everyone except Rei and Leeseo was dumbfounded. You all looked at Gaeul confused. It was quiet for a few moments when Rei broke the silence as she says “Ooookayyy, that’s settled then? Gaeul unnie and Jae-Hyeon will head to the tailor to get the remaining clothes and the rest of us stay here to… do whatever Yujin tells us.”
“That sounds a little unfair…” Liz whispers to Wonyoung. Which earned her a gesture to not say anything from Wonyoung so that neither of them will get yelled at by their unnie.
“Ready to go noona?” you ask Gaeul.
“Yup! Let’s go Hyeonnie.” she says cheerfully as she makes her way to the front door.
You follow her as you look behind you one last time where you find Leeseo mouthing “Hyeonnie” to you in a teasing way. You roll your eyes at her actions and make your way outside.
“You sure you don’t want to take a taxi, or at least the bus noona?” you ask Gaeul as you walk side by side.
“Of course I’m sure. Besides, the weather is perfect for walking anyway,” she says as she flashes you a bright smile. “C’mon hurry up! The shop closes at 5!”
“You do know I’m just matching your pace right?”
“I didn’t ask you to do that though!”
“Noona, if I was walking at my normal speed, I wouldn’t even be able to see me right now,” you tease her.
“YAH! I’m not that short!” she exclaims.
“You kinda are, noona. Even Leeseo caught up to you already.” you tease further.
“YAH!” she shouts again as she speeds up, leaving you behind as you laugh. “Hmph. What happened to the sweet boy back then. I bet he wouldn’t dream of saying those things to his noona before.” she says when you catch up to her.
“Oh I’m just kidding noona. I’m still that same boy as before. Only now I’m taller, smarter, and overall better in the best ways,” you smugly say.
“All that talk about improvement but you’re still as arrogant as ever,” she chuckles.
“Is that so?” you say while laughing. “I guess I have always been an arrogant kid huh?”
“Yeah, you kind of have been.” she chuckles.
The walk to the tailor was filled with laughter and the kind of comfort that comes from years of knowing each other. This has always been the case between you and her, effortless and familiar, the kind where you don’t even have to try. It just happens. There’s never a moment of awkwardness between you and her. Banter and jokes flow freely even if it’s just the two of you. The both of you always manage to match each others pace effortlessly as you walk, even with the somewhat drastic height difference. She nudges your shoulder when you say something dumb, you nudge her back. You always make sure to walk on the outside part of the road, a gesture you do with everyone you love without even thinking anymore. It’s simple and easy, something you didn’t want to give much thought until very recently.
You always treasure moments like this with Gaeul, but until when are you going to be satisfied with “just this”? Is it enough for you to be only seen as a kid? To never have the chance to cross that ‘line’ between the two of you?
“Are you sure you don’t want to do anything about it?” Leeseo’s voice echo in you head. It’s a question she has asked you repeatedly over the years. At first, your answers were certain, “definitely,” you say to Leeseo, the fear of rejection overcoming the bliss of what could be. Then, as time passed, your answers became uncertain, “maybe?” you answer Leeseo quietly, still undecided but not cowering in fear anymore. But lately, your mind has been at war with itself, constantly weighing the options against each other. The past few weeks leading up to the wedding has been filled with constant simulations of scenarios in your head. Your talk with Leeseo last night was what made you finally decide what you want to happen.
In the end, you have ultimately decided that you’re gonna go for it. That if you want to change the way she sees you, you’re the one that has to do something about it. No more worrying about the outcome, no more hiding behind half truths, and no more hoping she notices the fuckass “signs” you say you’ve been giving her.
“Say noona, are you finally seeing anyone?” you ask her.
She tensed up slightly it was almost imperceptible. But you saw it, of course you did.
“Why do you ask?” she asks back, shoulders slowly relaxing.
“I’m gonna answer that after you answer my question,”
“Fine,” she rolls her eyes. “I guess… yes, and no?”
“Hm? Care to elaborate?”
“Well I’m not currently dating anyone. But there is this one guy that I think I like? Though I don’t know if he likes me back.”
Fuck who is she talking about?
“Oh. What’s he like?” you ask.
“All I’m gonna say is that he’s cute” she says, lips curling up a little. “Shouldn’t you be the one answering the questions now?”
“What was your question again?”
“Why did you ask me if I’m currently seeing anyone?”
“Right. Well nothing really, I was just curious. I mean, it’s a wonder you haven’t been in a relationship even once ever since we were kids. I was just curious, that’s all.”
“Why is that such a ‘wonder’? Maybe I’m just waiting for the perfect guy?”
“Are you?”
“…Maybe? And why are you grilling me with these questions? You also haven’t been in a relationship since we were kids! So let me ask you too, you seeing anyone currently?”
“Well, we are kind of in the same boat. There’s also this girl that I like, but I don’t know if she likes me back. I’ve actually known her for a while and I just hope that once I have enough courage to tell her how I feel, it’s not too late.”
Is he… talking about Leeseo? Gaeul says to herself.
“Oh.” she has the same face you had earlier. “What’s she like?” she mirrors your question earlier.
“Well, she’s pretty, cute, and small.” you describe her as vaguely as you can.
“That’s all?”
“What? That’s two more things than what you used to describe your mystery guy earlier!”
“Tsk. That’s such a cop out answer.”
“And yours wasn’t?”
“Whatever, let’s just say we both like someone that currently don’t like us back.” she says, turning away from you.
“Sounds right to me. Come on, the shop’s just around the corner.” you say, walking past her.
“You sure you don’t want me to take some of those?” she asks, nodding towards the bags you are holding.
“Yes noona, they’re all light anyway. Matter of fact, you can probably hop on my back and I’d still be fine,” you say with a smug grin.
“Oh really?” she raises an eyebrow. “I don’t think I believe you.”
“You should.”
“Then prove it.”
“What?”
“Carry me, and the bags. At the same time. You said you could, right? Or were you just being arrogant again?”
“I wasn’t.”
“Then do it.” she says as she folds her arms, eyes daring you to do it.
“You’re kidding.”
“Do I look like I’m kidding?”
“You know what? Fuck it, you think I’m gonna back out?” you answer back.
“Oh I really hope you don’t.”
“Come on then, hop on.” you say, crouching down in front of her.
Your smug, calm demeanor is the absolute opposite of what’s happening inside your head right now. Holy shit is this really happening?
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to you, there is also something similar to yours is also happening in Gaeul’s head. Wait is this really happening? Why was I so confident earlier? What am I feeling right now? Why am I feeling this? Why is my heart beating so quickly? Is Rei right? Oh no this can’t be good, Rei is absolutely gonna tease me if she sees us. I think it’s too late to back out now. I’m just gonna seem more crazy if I back out now.
“So noona, are you hopping on or not?” you say, looking back at her.
“I-I am! Here I go…” she says reluctantly.
She hesitates for a moment, then steps closer without another word. She then rests her hands at your shoulders carefully. The first touch sends shivers down your spine, making you tense up a little. Then slowly, she climbs onto your back, her arms carefully wrapping around your neck as she settles her body behind your entire back, closer than the two of you have ever been before.
“Don’t drop me.” she whispers softly to your ear.
“I won’t.” you reply, standing up to continue walking.
“Okay… I trust you.”
It’s a simple reply, but somehow it makes your heart beat the fastest it ever did.
God I love this woman. You think to yourself as you continue to walk, slightly slower than your usual pace to prolong this feeling.
“You comfortable back there noona?
“Mmm yes, you’re very soft…” she says as she nestles deeper onto your back, pressing her cheeks at your shoulder as you feel her breath at your neck.
Her breathing slows down and you think to yourself that she fell asleep. As you continue walking for a few blocks, it was just silence between the two of you, until—
“Hyeonnie?” she says, breaking the silence.
“Yes noona?” you answer back softly.
“Do you mind telling me more things about this girl that you like?” she asks, voice so quiet it was almost a whisper.
“Oh. Um sure, I guess? Hmm, where do I even start?”
“Well she’s very sweet. She takes care of me even though she doesn’t have to. She notices the small things that most people miss. And she has the kindest heart I have ever seen.
You shift her slightly on your back to adjust your hold on her.
“We’re always laughing when we’re together. There’s rarely a dull moment between us two. Even silence becomes beautiful when she’s there with me.” you pause for a second.
“She’s just… amazing. Really.”
“Wow.” she says. “The way you talk about her… You must really like her a lot huh?”
“I do,” you softly say. “More than she could probably ever know.”
“That’s nice to hear. Whoever that girl is so lucky.” she says, tracing circles against your shoulders.
“Is she? Let’s just hope she feels the same way when I tell her then.” you say, looking forward while smiling.
“So… do you want me to carry you all the way to the house, or do you want to get down a few blocks early? You know, before the others see us.”
“Oh right, sorry,” she says, scratching her head. “Sorry, you’re just really comfortable. I didn’t even realize we were this close.”
“You can let me down here Hyeonnie,” she says, tapping your shoulder. “I think you’ve proven your point now.”
“Glad you believe me now.” you say with a small grin as you crouch to let her down.
She rolls her eyes at your statement, “Thanks for today, Hyeonnie. I had fun, really.” she says as she smiles at you.
“Thank you for coming with me noona. I had fun too, even more so because I was with you.” you say, smiling as you two continue to walk down the street.
Gaeul looks at you as you walk ahead of her. A small, soft smile forming on her lips.
I guess Rei was right, she thinks to herself. I do like him.
She exhales softly as she drags her hands across her face.
What am I supposed to do now?
Rei and Leeseo were walking home together when Rei suddenly says, “So, Jae-Hyeon likes Gaeul, right?”
“W-what? How’d you know?” Leeseo asks.
“Well he hasn’t been exactly subtle about it. Ever since he was a kid he was always staring at Gaeul whenever he has an opportunity.”
“Oh. Then let me ask you this. Is Jae-Hyeon the one Gaeul unnie likes?” she asks back.
“Mmmm yes. Wait, you know?”
“Well I’ve noticed Gaeul unnie acting a little different around him lately. I also overheard you and unnie talking earlier this week about someone she likes. So with that information I was kinda able to tell?”
“Huh. Well that makes sense. Can I ask you a question Leeseo?”
“Sure unnie. What is it?”
“You’re okay with… all of this? I’ve always thought you liked Jae-Hyeon, I mean, the two of you being so close ever since we were kids you know? I think I’d always thought something would happen between the two of you.”
“Me and him? I think we’re soulmates, just not that kind, you know?” she says with a smile.
“Well to be perfectly honest, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about it. Of course I have. I mean, how can I not? He’s such a great guy. He’s thoughtful, we get along very well, he’s always there for me, and of course, he makes damn good cookies.”
She exhales slightly. “I love him, I really do. Just not romantically. I see him more of an… like an extension of my self I guess? In another life, maybe we end up together, but I know it’s not in this one.”
Leeseo stops walking for a second to look up at the sky.
“Believe me, I’m the happiest person in the world, after him of course, that something is finally happening between them. He deserves it after all these years.” she says as she smiles and continue walking forward.
“That’s— wow, Leeseo. What you two have is actually so precious. You are both lucky to have each other as someone to lean on. I’m happy you have someone like him in your life.” she says as she wraps her arm around Leeseo’s shoulders.
“Okay, now that that’s clear, why don’t we get the two oblivious love birds together huh?”
“Something arrived for you noona!” you yell out as you close the front door.
“Who’s it from?” she asks from the living room.
“It says ‘To Professor Yujin, Congrats on your wedding! From your lovely students.’ aw that’s sweet, your students love you.”
“Oh please, most of them are probably just bribing me to go easy on their final exams. But they are good students. I’ll make sure to send them a message.”
“So, what’s on the agenda today besides the rehearsal dinner?” you ask your sister.
“Umm nothing much, we already completed everything yesterday so let’s just relax and get ready for tomorrow.” she answers calmly.
“Wow. This is the calmest you’ve been in months. I almost forgot what you looked like pre ‘Bridezilla’ mode.” you tease her.
She rolls her eyes at you. “Tomorrow you’ll see just how worth the months of screaming and rage are. It’s going to be the best wedding you are ever going to attend in your whole life. Even your own wedding won’t compare to it.” she says smugly.
“Not if I get you to plan my future wedding.” you say with a smirk as you start walking up the stairs.
“Oh wait! Actually, can you pick up the flowers for the bouquet toss? That’s the only thing missing for the reception tomorrow.”
“I mean, yeah I could, but what the hell do I know about flowers?”
“Hmm you’re right. I guess I could ask Gaeul to come with you?”
You immediately smile at the suggestion. “Yeah, that could work.” you say, trying to hide your excitement.
“Okay. I’ll call her now.”
“I’m gonna get ready now!” you yell as you sprint up the stairs.
“You and me again huh? If this keeps on happening I’m gonna think you’re doing this on purpose.” she says as you open the car door for her.
“What do you mean? The orders come from noona, not me.” you protest. “Why, you getting tired of me already noona?” you say with a slight grin.
“What? No! You actually make running errands for your sister enjoyable. So I’m grateful for that. And thank you for opening the car door for me, you didn’t have to.” she says while smiling at you.
“Don’t mention it noona,” you say with a smile. “I wanted to.”
She blushes as you say those words.
“Just go whenever you’re ready, Hyeonnie.” she says, trying to hide her face.
“Come on come on! The weather is perfect for walking!” she says as she immediately gets out of the car as soon as you park.
God she’s so adorable. I would go on walks with her everyday if she’d let me. Even if we walk the same route every single time.
“Jeez noona relax! We have plenty of time before the dinner! No need to rush.” you shout, trying to catch up to her.
“I know, I’m just so excited to be at the park again. It’s been a while since I’ve been here, and the weather’s extra nice today too.” she says as she slows down, looking up to you as she smiles. “Plus, you’re here. So it’s immediately 100x better than usual.” she adds as she links her arms with yours.
You immediately tense up at this new sensation, sure she has been somewhat touchy with you all these years. But that was only limited to cheek pinching and head pats, linking arms with you has never happened before.
“What’s up Hyeonnie? Why are you suddenly so stiff?” she asks as she notices you tensing up.
“O-oh nothing noona. Come on, I think I see an ice cream cart over there.” you say pointing towards the fountain, slowly regaining your composure.
“Ooh that sounds nice! Let’s go!” she says as she practically drags you towards the fountain.
“You know, for a small person, you are deceptively strong.” you say as you reach the ice cream stand.
“That’s right, so you better think twice before fighting me.” she says, trying to look intimidating, but ended up looking cute instead.
You chuckle under your breath. “So, you want the toothpaste flavored ice cream right?”
“IT DOES NOT TASTE LIKE TOOTHPASTE! ….But yes, two scoops please.” she says, rolling her eyes at you.
“It does, but let’s not talk about it today. I’ll be right back.”
You come back as you hold out her order in front of her. “Two scoops of mint chocolate ice cream in a cup, just how you like it.”
“Thanks. What flavor did you get?”
“Peach. You know I love anything peach flavored.” you say as the two of you fall into step with each other again. “So, you excited for tomorrow?”
“Oh very much so. I’m so ready to cry at the ceremony and party hard at the reception.” she says while smiling.
“Look at that duck!” she says, pointing at the duck near the pond. “the way it waddles is so cute!”
“You’re really that entertained by a duck?” you tease her, a small smile forming on your face.
She elbows you lightly at your side, “Don’t act like it’s not cute.”
“Ow! Okay okay, it is cute…. just like you.” you whisper that last part under your breath so that she doesn’t understand.
“What was that?” she asks, eye brows furrowed.
“Nothing! I just said the duck was cute! Come on, let’s get the flowers already, we don’t wanna be late to the dinner.” you say, trying to change the topic.
“Oh yeah, right. I was having so much fun just walking around with you that I forgot we were supposed to do something here.”
“Me too, I didn’t think just walking around the park could feel this nice.”
She looks at you as she smiles and takes a step closer to you. She links her arms with yours again as she says “Come on, let’s get the flowers for the bouquet and go to the dinner.”
“Noona! We’re gonna be late! What’s taking you so long?” you shout, hoping it would make her move faster.
“Be there in 3 minutes!” she yells back
“You said that 5 minutes ago!”
“I mean it this time!”
Just as you were about to yell again, you heard steps going down the stairs. You look up at the sound, and just like that, all the worry about being late just vanished.
The first thing you notice is the way her hair frames her face perfectly. The way the light bounces off her skin. The way those eyes of hers are looking at you right now, like she wants you to say something.
But you can’t. All that you can think of right now is that:
She’s beautiful. She’s so fucking beautiful.
You open your mouth but immediately forgot what you were about to say. You try to speak again but you can’t form a single coherent sentence.
Everything else seemingly disappeared, All that’s left now is her.
“Well?” she breaks the silence with a question, breaking you out of your trance.
“Wow— I mean, wow. You look— wow,” was all you could say.
“That was three wow’s in a single sentence,” she chuckles. “I guessing that’s good, right?”
“I mean- wow” you take a deep breath, “Yes noona, you look amazing.”
“Thank you Hyeonnie, you look good too.”
“Thank you noona, should we get going?”
“Let’s go, I hope I didn’t make us too late for the dinner.”
“I don’t think anyone is going to complain about us being late when they see how beautiful you look.”
“Stop it! You already said I look amazing.” she says, slapping your arm. “We seriously need to get going.”
You arrive at the rehearsal dinner fifteen minutes late, your arm and Gaeul’s linked together because she said she’s not used to the heels she’s wearing and she might trip (or so she says). Earning some confused looks from other family and friends.
You both find your seats, which is, surprise surprise, next to each other. You see each others name plates on the table and look at each other and laugh at the same time.
“I guess we can’t get rid of each other huh?” you say.
“I guess not.” she smiles. “Why? You getting sick of me already?
“What? Not at all. Maybe it’s you who wants to get rid of me?”
“Maybe. Who knows?” she says dismissingly.
“You’re impossible.” you say as you pull out her seat for her. “Let’s just take a seat, they might start serving the food soon.”
She stares at you with raised eye brows. “First you open the car door for me, now you pull out my chair for me. What’s got you acting like that all of a sudden?”
“Hm? I don’t know what you’re talking about noona. I’ve always been like this. Maybe you just notice it more now?”
“Mmm, maybe.” she says, thinking about what you said. “But really, thank you Jae-Hyeon. You really didn’t have to, both the car door and the chair.”
“And I’m telling you noona, I wanted to. Both times, and many more times after that.” you say with a soft smile.
She smiles softly at your response and sits. You push her chair in and get her settled. As you sat on the chair right beside her, you hear the clinking of glasses, signaling the start of the speeches part of the evening.
The evening slows down after the dinner. You and Gaeul split after the last course to socialize with others. You wander around the restaurant with two glasses of champagne in your hands as you look for Leeseo. You find her at a balcony off to the side of the restaurant looking at the view.
“Hey,” you call out to her. “Where’s Rei noona? Weren’t you just with her?” you ask as you walk towards her.
“She went to the roof top to for a smoke.” she says, still staring at the skyline.
“I thought she quit?”
“I thought so too.” she says, chuckling.
“Anyways, how’s your night going?” you hand her one glass.
“Thanks,” she says as she takes the glass. “Good, but certainly not better than yours.” she smirks. “I take it it’s going well between you two?”
“It’s going very well. At least I think it is.” you say. But I’m still not convinced she likes me too. I still feel like she sees me as a little brother.”
“Relax man. I told you, I see the way she smiles at you, that’s not a smile you give to someone you only see as a little sibling. She looks at you like how Azzo looks at chicken. And that’s saying a lot.” she chuckles.
“I guess.” you say quietly, still unsure.
“I’m telling you, I AM right, shouldn’t that be enough? At this point, you just have to think of a good way to tell her how you feel.”
“That’s the thing, I’ve been thinking of ways to tell her this past 24 hours but I just can’t come up with one.”
“You’ll think of one soon, I know you will.” she says softly. “It doesn’t have to be perfect you know. It just has to be real.”
“Wow, that’s weirdly insightful. Who are you and what have you done with Leeseo?” you tease her.
“I guess alcohol make me wiser.” she says with a smirk.
“It’s called being drunk. God, why do you have to be such a light drinker?”
“Hey it’s not my fault you never get buzzed. Besides, I can drink however much I want because I know you’ll take care of me when I pass out.”
“Now you’re just abusing my kindness. What if I decide to just leave you here and go home on my own?.”
“Oh please. You love me too much for you to do that.” she says confidently.
You roll your eyes at what she said because you both know she’s right.
Your conversation with Leeseo continues as you tell her everything you haven’t told her yet. You both make your way towards an empty table at the main dining hall. You spot Gaeul at another table talking with Wonyoung and Liz.
Guests start going home as the restaurant staff start cleaning up the empty tables. You notice Leeseo get more drunk by the minute. You stop her just before she was able to reach for a 6th glass of champagne.
“Okay, that’s enough. I’m cutting you off.” you say with a firm voice.
“Last one pleaseeee.” she pouts as she looks at you with pleading eyes.
“No. I don’t want you throwing up in my car.”
“Hmph. Meanie!” she says as she stomps her foot.
“You really think throwing a tantrum will convince me to give you one more glass?” you say, raising one eye brow.
She mockingly mouths your words back at you.
You roll your eyes at her actions. “Real mature. Okay, just sit there peacefully for 5 mins. I’m just gonna go pee and I’m taking you home. Please don’t do anything stupid while I’m gone.”
You walk away and head to the comfort room. As soon as you round the corner, Gaeul notices Leeseo trying to stand up on her own and failing badly.
“Leeseo! Oh you’re drunk again. Where’s Jae-Hyeon? Doesn’t he always take care of you when you drink?”
“Unnieee! It’s youuu. You look so beautiful tonight.” she says, slurring her words a little. “Jae-Hyeon just went to the comfort room. He’ll be back soon.”
“Thank you Leeseo,” she smiles.
Aish where is he? What’s taking him so long and why did he leave Leeseo by herself.
“Okay. I’ll stay with you for a bit while we wait for him. You might go missing again if I leave you on your own.” she says, to which Leeseo nods her head in response.
After a few seconds of silence, Leeseo broke the silence with:
“Unnieeeeee. I’ve got a secret.” Leeseo says giddily.
“Hm? What is it?” she asks.
“Jae-Hyeon has a crush on you unnie. Like a big BIG crush.” she says with eyes half closed.
“He… what?” she says, confused. “What makes you say that?”
“Come on unnie, we’re best friends. He tells me everything you know.” she says, leaning back in her chair.
“R-really? I thought you’re the one that he likes?” she says quietly.
“WHAT?” she says as she laughs out loud. “Now what made you think THAT unnie?”
“Well, I mean the two of you are practically inseparable. Plus, just yesterday he said he likes someone pretty, cute, and small. Isn’t that you?”
“HAHAHAHA. He’d never in a million years use those words to describe me. If he was to describe me, he’d use annoying, stubborn, and probably annoying again.”
“So what you mean is…”
“Yes unnie, he was describing you. God, both of you are just so oblivious huh?” she says with a smirk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Gaeul asks.
“Oh please unnie, it’s obvious you like him too.” she looks at Gaeul smugly.
“WHAT? HOW DO YOU KNOW?” her eyes widen. “Wait, does HE know?!”
“I mean it’s pretty obvious, for me at least. And I did tell him you were looking at him differently lately. But I think he still doesn’t believe me.”
“Okay okay. That’s good. I think?” she says looking up at the ceiling.
“Okay fine. I’m only saying this because I know you are going to forget all of it by the morning and I need to get it off my chest. But yes, I like him too. For so long I just saw him as a little brother. But lately, these last few months leading up to the wedding made us interact more with each other.” she sighs. “I just started to develop feelings for him all of a sudden. Or maybe it’s always been there ever since and I just didn’t notice. Either way, I know I like him right now.”
Just as Leeseo was about to say something, you appeared in the hallway, headed straight for them.
“Oh shit unnie he’s back! Fuck fuck, I’m going to pretend I blacked out!”
As you approach the table you get curious as to what Gaeul was doing there.
“Noona? What are you doing here? Aren’t you gonna go with Liz and Wonyoung unnie?” you ask her.
“I am. But I saw Leeseo on her own and went to her.” she says plainly. “What took you so long? And why did you leave her? You know we had a very hard time finding her the last time she wandered alone when she was drunk.” she crosses her arms.
“Well I couldn’t take her to the men’s room can’t I? But yeah, I’m sorry I took long, the men’s room in this floor is under renovation so I had to use the one on the floor above.
“Apology accepted. Just be more careful next time, we’re lucky I saw her just as she was about to stand.” she says as she stands up.
“Anyways, drive safe Hyeonnie.” she says softly as she reaches up to brush a hair from your forehead. “Your sister would freak out if her maid of honor walked down the aisle without the best man, so you better get home in one piece.”
You reach for her hand that brushed your hair and held it. “I will noona. You get home safely too. I promise I won’t let you walk alone tomorrow.” you squeeze her hand, a gentle confirmation of the promise you made.
“See you tomorrow, Hyeonnie. Goodnight.”
“See you noona. Goodnight.” you give her a soft smile.
You watch her walk away for a short while before you turned and looked at Leeseo passed out in the chair. (She actually blacked out while she was pretending to black out)
“Oh you big drunk baby. Hopefully you didn’t do anything dumb.” you say, smiling and shaking your head.
You pick her up and carry her to your car. After buckling her in the passenger seat you went to the driver side and started heading home to rest up for the wedding tomorrow.
“How do I look?” you ask Leeseo while straightening out your suit in front of the mirror.
“You look good.” she says flatly “Can we go now? I want to get my makeup done as soon as possible so they can redo it if they mess it up.”
“Come on you didn’t even look at me properly.” you say in protest.
“Argh fine. Turn around for me.”
You give her a 360 turn.
“So? What do you think?” you ask her.
“I’m telling you, you look good!” she exclaims.
“You really mean that? Like seriously, genuinely think I look good in this suit?”
“YES. YOU. DO.” she yells it now. “What’s up with you? Where’d all your arrogance go?”
“It’s still there… the overthinking’s just taking over right now.” you say plainly. “I’m finally going to tell her how I feel after years and years of just yearning for her. Of course I want to look my best.”
“Oh you’re adorable when you’re nervous.” she says, shaking her head. “I’m telling you, just be yourself. That’s the best version of you, that’s who she likes. Your confession just has to be honest and genuine, how you look doesn’t factor into it. You can tell her how you feel in your pajamas and it still won’t matter.”
You take a deep breath.
“Okay. Thank you, I needed that. I got this.” you say as your confidence comes back.
“Good. Now can we go? I really want to get my make up done already”
“Okay lets go. You got everything you need in the car? I’m not going back for your heels if you manage to somehow leave them behind.”
“Yes dad I have everything I need.” she says in a sarcastic tone.
You roll your eyes as you grab your stuff and head out the door towards your car.
You reach the hotel where the wedding is being held and park at the spots reserved for wedding guests.
“Finally. I was about to lose my mind.” Leeseo says as your car comes to a full stop.
“Just go ahead, I’ll bring your gown and other stuff up. Just get your makeup done.” you tell her.
“YAY! YOU’RE THE BEST!” she says, giving you a big hug before running towards the hotel’s main entrance almost tripping on an uneven tile.
You chuckle as you shake your head at her actions.
You get out of the car and open the trunk to get your and Leeseo’s stuff then head towards the hotel.
Room 816… 816… where are you 816. You think to yourself as you traverse the hotel, looking for the the bridesmaid’s room to drop off Leeseo’s stuff.
Ah there you are. Just as you were about to knock on the door it opens and you see Wonyoung right in front of you.
“Jae-Hyeon? What are you doing here? Isn’t your room on another floor?” she asks you, confused.
“Oh hello noona, I’m just here to drop of Leeseo’s gown and other things.” you tell her.
“Oh, come in then. She’s getting her makeup done in the other room, you can just leave her stuff there.” she says, pointing to the living room. “Okay, stay if you want, but I’m gonna head out for a bit. Your sister is asking me to check on a supplier before I get dressed.”
“Okay noona, stay safe.” you give her a smile before putting down Leeseo’s things.
“Hyeonnie? Is that you?” you hear someone calling out your name as footsteps approach.
“Gaeul noona?” you call out.
She rounds the corner and immediately smiles at the sight of you.
“It is you! I knew I heard your voice. What are you doing here Hyeonnie?”
“Hi noona! Just dropped off Leeseo’s things. Why?”
“Uhh no reason actually, just didn’t expect to see you until later.” she says, smiling. “Anyways, you ready for the wedding?”
“As ready as I can be. How about you?”
“Just got my makeup done. I’m kinda sleepy though.” she yawns.
“Oh. Do you have to get dressed right away?”
“Hmm, I don’t think so. Why?”
“Great. Then let’s go for a quick coffee run. We can’t have you go to sleep during the wedding can we?” you say with a smile.
“That… that actually sounds nice. Which café are we going to?”
“Well your favorite café is only a couple blocks away, why don’t we go there?”
“Yay! Let’s go!” she says as she grabs your sleeve and skips to the door.
“Shouldn’t you tell the others you’re gonna go out?”
“Don’t worry about it, we won’t be gone long anyway. Unless you’re actually planning to kidnap me instead of getting coffee.”
“Says the one who’s dragging me by the sleeves. I think you’re the one who’s gonna kidnap me.” you say playfully.
She rolls her eyes at you. “Whatever. Let’s just go!”
You walk faster as she tugs at your sleeves harder and quickens her pace.
“Yes um one large passion fruit tea for me and a large chocolate latte, oat milk instead of regular, and one and a half pumps of caramel for her.” you say to the cashier. “Oh, and an order of the acorn cookies too please.”
“Would that be all?” the woman at the cashier asks.
“Hmm, maybe a box of assorted pastries as well, for take out. That’ll be all, thank you.”
She is looking at you with quiet disbelief as you pay for your order. After paying, you notice her staring at you.
“What?”
“You have my go-to coffee order memorized…” she says, still looking at you. “And the acorn cookies as well.”
“Your order is two items. It’s not that hard to remember.” you say, trying to brush it off.
“You even remembered the part about the oat milk and the number of pumps of caramel memorized.” she points out.
“Well it won’t be the same without those won’t it?”
“Well yes, but still. You didn’t have to remember everything.” she says, playing with the hem of her shirt.
“I wanted to.” you say softly.
“You’ve been saying that a lot lately.” her face is completely red now.
“And I meant it every time,” you smile at her. “Come on noona, let’s find somewhere we can sit.”
She looks at you as you walk away to find a table. She smiles to her self as she thinks.
Oh God I’m doomed. I’ve completely fallen for him. What if he’s just like this to me because he’s generally a nice person? What if he’s like this to everyone? What’s Yujin gonna say when she finds out I like him? What will uncle and auntie think? Oh god does he really even like me too? Am I really believing Leeseo’s drunk words? This isn’t good, I’m spiraling. Just breathe, Gaeul. Brea—
“Noona, over here!” you yell out to her.
Your voice snaps her out of her thoughts.
“Oh um coming!”
Get it together Gaeul! You have to act cool, at least until after the ceremony! You can decide what you want to do until then. But right now, the wedding is your priority!
“What’s up noona? You kind of spaced out a bit there.”
“It’s nothing, just wondering whether I did the thing your sister asked me to do.”
“What thing?”
“Just typical maid of honor stuff, suppliers and such. Really, it’s alright.”
“Okay then,” you say plainly. “So, what are you looking forward to the most later?”
“Of course the ceremony. And maybe a little bit for the after party, want to party and get wasted, y’know?” she says while nodding. “How about you?”
“Well sure I’m excited for the main ceremony, but what I’m really looking forward to is what I’m going to do after.” you say, smirking.
“What is it? Is it a surprise for Yujin?” she asks with a curious look on her face.
“It’s not necessarily a surprise specifically for her, but I assure you. She WILL be surprised”
“Oooo I’m really curious now. Can you tell me? Please please please,” she looks at you with pleading eyes.
“I’m sorry noona, but I can’t tell you.” you look at her apologetically. “But I do promise you’re going to be the first to know when it happens.”
“Aww okay. I’m gonna hold you to that promise!” she jokingly looks at you intensely.
“And I’m gonna fulfill it, don’t worry.” you chuckle.
An hour has passed and the both of you are inside the hotel lobby again, waiting for the elevators to come.
“Oh I almost forgot, these pastries are for the others.” you hand her the box of pastries. “So you have a peace offering for them if they get mad that you were gone for a bit.”
“That’s very sweet of you Hyeonnie. I’ll make sure they know it came from you.”
You give her a smile and a nod for a response as the elevator dings as it arrives at the lobby.
You press your respective floors as you enter the elevator.
“I’m still curious about that surprise of yours you know.”
You laugh when she says it. “Why? What do you think the surprise is about?”
“That’s the thing, I’ve been racking my brain for something but I couldn’t think of what it could be about.” she runs her hand through her face. “Okay tell me this much, will I like the surprise?”
“Well I really hope you do.” you say, looking at her. “But I think you will, if Leeseo’s prediction is right.”
“What’s Leeseo got to do with it?”
“Lets just say she’s the one who pushed me to do the surprise.”
“Okay….. I still have no clue.”
“Just don’t think about it too much noona, you’ll find out soon enough.” you say to her with a smile.
The elevator stops at her floor, making her look at you before stepping out.
“Fine, I guess. See you at the wedding hall later?”
“See you noona.” you say, giving her a smile right before the elevator doors close.
God I’m really going to do it. This is it. Tonight’s the night. I wanted to do this for so many years and I’m finally doing it. I just hope it goes well, dear God please let it go well.
The elevator stops at your floor and you step out. Heading to your room to do last preparations of your own for the wedding.
The wedding starts with the officiant walking down the aisle, followed by the groom, then the bridesmaids and groomsmen. Up next is you and Gaeul walking down the aisle together, being the Maid of Honor and the Best man.
“Don’t trip.” you tease Gaeul right before walking.
“I won’t. But even if I fall, you’ll catch me anyway. Right?” her ears heat up at the double meaning of her words.
“Of course I will, you’ll do the same for me right?”
“I don’t know about that, you’re much more bigger than me.” she teases back.
“Ouch,” you pout jokingly.
“I’m kidding. Of course I will catch you, you big baby.” she looks up at you with those gorgeous eyes of hers.
You smile at her in response, satisfied with what she said. The wedding coordinator signals the two of you to go to the mark as you will be walking next. She links her arms with your as you walk over to the mark.
As you start walking with her down the aisle, you can’t help but smile. It feels so natural for you, like it was always meant to happen. Like this was some sort of trailer for what will happen in the future. You look at her softly as she looks ahead. You can’t help but think that if given the opportunity, you want to spend the rest of your life together with her. This moment only fuels you further to tell her how you feel after the ceremony. You two split at the end of the aisle, sitting at your respective seats as you wait for your sister to be walked down the aisle by your parents.
The wedding ceremony goes smoothly, Yujin gets walked down the aisle by your parents, as the groom meets them half way and walks her the rest of the way. Vows were given and promises were made. Everything went perfect, just like Yujin wanted. As the officiant officially pronounce them husband and wife, they have their first kiss as a couple and a round of applause and cheers fill the room.
“LONG LIVE THE NEWLY WEDDED COUPLE!!!” everyone says in unison as they toast up their drinks up in the air. After the food was eaten and speeches were given, the night ramps up as the party part of the evening starts.
You wander around the ballroom to look for Gaeul. Slightly nervous for what you’re about to do. You spot her near the mobile bar with the rest of the girls. You walk up to them slowly, hands in your pocket because you don’t know where else to put them.
Liz notices you first before you were able to talk.
“Jae-Hyeon! Right on time! We’re about to do shots. Come come, we won’t take no for an answer.” she says loudly, battling the thumping of the speakers overhead.
“I’ll join you guys later! But for now do you mind if I borrow Gaeul noona for a bit?”
They all look at you confused, except for Leeseo and Rei, they know exactly what you need Gaeul for. Still, they play along so that you won’t blow your cover.
“What do you need her for?” Wonyoung asks.
“Just some supplier dispute!” you lie to her. “Noona’s the one who talked to them before so I need her to clarify some things.”
“Oh okay then. Just bring her back quickly!”
“Will do noona.” you flash her a smile.
You and Gaeul walk away from the group. You look back and Leeseo and Rei is giving you knowing looks. To which you shake your head in response.
“He’s actually gonna do it.” Leeseo whispers to Rei.
“Well it’s About Time(another great movie, check it out).” Rei says in response.
“What’s this about the supplier dispute?” Gaeul asks you, worried.
“Oh that’s not true, I just said that so that they don’t ask too many questions.”
“Huh? So what do you need me for then?” her eyes then widen, as if realizing something. “Oh this is about your surprise isn’t it?”
“Uhhh yes” you say, scratching the back of your neck.
“Are you finally going to tell me what it is?” she asks excitedly.
“Yes noona. But first, let’s find somewhere more quiet where we can talk without screaming at each other.”
She chuckles, “Now that’s a smart idea. Lead the way then.”
You grab her by the wrist gently and lead her towards the outdoor garden you saw earlier.
Her heart can’t help but beat faster at the sensation of your gentle fingers on her wrist. She looks at the back of your head as you lead her through groups of people, using your body to shield her from the crowd. This is when she gets a feeling of what your surprise is going to be.
Is he… Is he going to do what I think he’s about to do? Is this the surprise he’s been telling me about? It can’t be, right? But why am I hoping it is? You need to calm down Gaeul. If he IS going to do what you think he’s gonna do you need to be calm and don’t freak out.
“We’re almost there noona, just a little bit longer.” your words take her out of her thoughts. Your hand still on her wrist even though there’s no more crowds to shield her from.
You slow down as you reach the big door leading out to the garden.
The garden is quiet compared to the lively reception behind you. Fairy lights hanging between trees, casting their lights over the stone pathways leading to the center of the garden. In the center sits a simple, marble fountain. Water freely spewing from above, then softly flowing into the pool below. The sound of water flowing blending beautifully with the residual sounds coming from the ballroom.
Flowers line the pathway towards the fountain. Their scent lingering in the air, along with the cool night breeze. Everything somehow feels softer in this garden, like you’re tucked away somewhere far away, somewhere quieter, slower. Somewhere that exists just for the two of you.
You stop at the door way of the garden, turning to look at her. She’s mesmerized by everything, the lights, the flowers, and the fountain. After taking it all in, she turns to look at you too.
“It’s beautiful isn’t it?” you say softly.
“It is, so much.” she answers simply, still amazed with it.
“Come on, the view is better from the fountain.” you grab her hand this time, squeezing it gently, as if reassuring her everything’s alright.
She follows you without resistance, looking at you, then to the surroundings, before locking her eyes back at you. She can’t help but smile at the sight of you in this beautiful garden.
As you reach the fountain, you look back at her. Seeing her smiling preciously at you. To which you can’t help but smile back.
“Why are you smiling like that?” you ask gently.
“It’s just— This place is so beautiful. How did you discover it?” she says, still smiling, looking directly at you.
“I came across it earlier when I was looking for a janitor, I think I was fated to find it.”
“But why did you bring me here? Is this the surprise you were talking about earlier?”
The both of you doesn’t notice that your hands are still in each other’s.
“I guess you can say it’s part of the surprise.” you chuckle softly. “Plus I think it’s kinda selfish to gatekeep this beautiful place all to my self. Besides, I think this is the best place to do what I’m about to do.”
“What do you mean?”
You grab her other hand now, softly running your fingers through her knuckles. She looks down at your hands briefly, before looking back up to look directly at your eyes.
“Noona…” you smile at her softly. “I’ve been wanting to say this for quite a while now.”
She’s quiet now. The light’s reflecting in her eyes perfectly.
“I like you noona, more than I could have ever known. I’ve liked you for God knows how long now.”
She’s still looking at you, her expression shifting into something softer.
“It’s you noona. It’s always been you. It’s you who bright up my day, it’s you who I look forward to seeing every single time, it’s your voice I want to hear every waking hour of my days, and it’s you who I want to spend every moment of the day with.”
“Hyeonnie…..”
It’s now your turn to hold her gaze as she tries to turn her feelings into words.
“I-I like you too. I don’t know when or how it happened. But I’m glad it did.” her right hand reaches up to cup your face.
“For the longest time I only thought of you as a little kid, just the baby brother of my bestfriend. But then something changed, I started looking for you everywhere I went, I started missing your voice, I even started going to your house more often so that I can see you more.” she chuckles. “I even got jealous whenever Leeseo told stories about you involving other girls.”
She carresses you cheek with her thumb.
“At first I tried to deny it, I told my self I was just being defensive, that I was just looking out for you because I was concerned about your wellbeing your noona. But the more I denied it, the more it became real.”
You step closer to her.
“I love you noona.”
“I love you too, Hyeonnie. So much.”
“How much?”
“So much that if you don’t kiss me soon I will push you into the fountain.”
You chuckle as you hear those words.
“We just poured our hearts out for each other and you’re already threatening me?”
“Try me.” she says, trying to be intimidating, but a smile ruins any intimidation she has.
The water splashes beside you two. Water flowing down as music from the speakers leaks through from the doors. But it all fades into the background as your gaze finds each other’s again and your hands rest at her waist.
She looks nervous now, you probably do too. You both probably look vulnerable under each other’s gaze.
“You know,” you say as your thumb softly brushes against her side. “I’ve wanted to do this for the longest time.”
“Then what are you waiting for?”
And this time, you don’t hesitate.
You pull her closer to you as you lean down, capturing her lips in a kiss. At first it was soft, hesitant, as if you are both testing the waters. Then she kisses you back, and suddenly, the kiss turns into something more desperate, as if the both of you is trying to make up for lost time in a single kiss. She grabs your suit and pulls you closer to her, she is holding on to you like you’re gonna float away if she holds on any softer.
The two of you finally pull away, you rest your forehead on hers as a chuckle escapes your lips.
“Wow, that was— wow.” you say, still in disbelief.
“You really like saying ‘wow’ a lot huh?”
“Well what is one supposed to say when they finally get to kiss the person they liked for so long?”
“You’re such an idiot.” she says, shaking her head.
“Your idiot now.” you kiss her forehead.
“I guess you are now huh?” she pulls you down for a quick kiss to your lips.
“I love you, Ahn Jae-Hyeon.”
“I love you too, Kim Gaeul.”
You both savor the moment alone, under the stars for a little while. She rests her head onto your shoulders. You kiss her on the top of her head as you reach down to link your fingers. Running your thumb over hers.
For a moment, there was just silence between the two of you. The sound of water falling down, the music leaking from the ballroom, and the sound of crickets filling the background.
You squeeze her hand one last time before breaking the silence.
“So… our wedding next?”
