“I wanna become an idol when I grow up!”
A simple sentence yet it holds the weight of the dreams and aspirations of a young girl. Through the road, echoed the girl’s future. She raised her hand towards the sky of the setting sun, holding onto the orange hues as if she was making a wish.
Becoming an idol wasn’t an easy task, even more so for a simple girl living in a small town but nothing was going to stop her.
Even he knew that.
“Are you still about all of the idol stuff?”
“Of course I am! I want to appear on air, sing on stage and have concerts around the world! It’s my one and only dream!”
“Don’t forget about me once you’re famous then, alright?”
“Of course, I won’t! How could I ever forget you? Here, give me your hand.”
As their pinkies intertwined, a vow was set in stone.
It was small yet it was meaningful as any other act of promise. One that couldn’t and wouldn’t be broken by the test of time.

“I-i got into an audition! Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it!”
“I can’t really believe it either. You must be off to Seoul now, right?”
“I’ll still stay here dummy! It’s still weeks away but I have to practice more. How about after school! Do you wanna come over to help me?”
“Please, we both know that I’ll only end up just watching you but fine, I’ll go.”
“Great, we can study for that math test afterwards!”
“So how did your audition go?”
“I managed to mess up not once, twice, not even thrice from how nervous I was. I… I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Chin up, will you? I’m not used to you being this down. C'mon, I heard the vending machine down the street is fixed and it has your favorite drink in it.”
“I’ll only go if you pay.”
“Oh stop with the cheeky smile. Fine, just this once.”
“I can’t believe it, you’re actually moving to Seoul. You’re actually…leaving.”
“Yah, don’t say it like that. You’re really going to make me cry.”
“How else could I put it? You’re actually leaving.”
“I’ll call when I have the time, don’t worry. And I’ll visit every so often. Who knows, maybe I’ll just appear right in front of your house’s door.”
“Pfft, I’ll probably faint if that happens.”
“I didn’t know they were this strict about missing a step.”
“It’s fine to mess up sometimes as long as you give it your all the next time. If I knew anyone that could do that, it’s you so cheer up.”
“How do you always know what to say?”
“Maybe because I’ve known you for years? Don’t know though, just a thought.”
“Maybe. Wait-I…i got to go. I’ll make sure to call you again next time.”
“ it’s fine. By-”
*BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!*
As summer turned to spring, then to autumn then to winter, he waited.
As the sun replaced the moon and the moon replaced the sun, he kept on waiting.
Waiting could hurt someone.
Waiting for the phone to ring could hurt.
Waiting for someone to walk beside you could hurt.
Waiting for someone to appear right in front of the door could hurt.
It all could hurt if it all led to nothing after pure certainty.
As the lights shined down and the cheers of the crowd grew louder, a girl’s smile couldn’t be contained anymore. She greeted the people with cheer and enthusiasm, the same way she always did.
Through the television watched someone who looked at her with a sense of bittersweet pride.
He looked at her the same way he did back then when he waited and waited for her, with the hope that she might just come back.
The feeling of missing someone who will never come back made his lips feel weighted and weighted, burying it into an expression of disdain.
“ I hate you, An Yujin.”
