You bring a girlfriend home for the first time in your life, and your crazy, close-knit family makes sure it's gonna be an experience you'll never forget.
It was louder than usual today.
Sure, it’s to be expected. There’s a family gathering happening. The reason for it though, you aren’t entirely sure. Maybe it’s someone’s birthday or anniversary. Or someone graduated or got a promotion. It’s hard to tell really, growing up in a Korean-Filipino household means that your family accepts every excuse they can so that everyone can get together as often as possible.
Things are currently going how they usually go at this point of the party. The kids are running around while the grown ups are scattered, having their own conversations around the house. Some are talking about politics, while some are talking about how the NBA playoffs are going, others are already talking about what food they’re most excited to eat later.
And of course, some of your uncles are already at the karaoke machine, bottles of beers in their hands as they somehow nail the high note of a classic love song they have absolutely no business of hitting.
Nothing appears to be out of the ordinary, but things seem to be a little too loud for you today.
“Well well well, golden boy’s finally bringing someone home for the first time.” a voice cuts through all the noise. “You nervous?”
You turn around and see your eldest cousin, Nayeon, looking at you with her arms crossed.
“What do you think?” you scoff, checking your watch. “Shit, she’s gonna be here any minute now.”
“Relax dude, they’re gonna love her.” she puts a hand on your shoulder.
“You’re right, you’re right. I just really want this to go well. First time bringing home a girlfriend and all, you know?”
“Oh I know,” she says with a smirk. “But I think you know damn well this is not going to go according to your plan at all.”
“Yeah…” you chuckle. “I love our family but we both know they have the tendency to go overboard.”
“Trust me, I know. I think I’m the one who suffered through their antics the most,” she laughs. “They mean well though, it’s annoying, sure, but it all comes from a place of love.”
“Ugh I know, but can’t they just, I don’t know. Tone it down a bit, just for today?” you say, running a hand through your face.
“…”
She’s just looking at you with an amused look on her face, raising one of her eyebrows.
“Ah fuck who am I kidding, we both know that’s not happening.”
You are both laughing at the absurdity of your statement when your phone buzzes.

“Is that her?” she asks, trying to peek at your phone.
“Yep, says she’s going to be here in ten,” you take a deep breath. “Okay. This is it. They’re gonna meet her for the first time and we’re all gonna have a very good time.”
“That’s the spirit!” she slaps your back. “Fair warning though, there’s a very high chance you’re gonna die from embarrassment. Either our family is gonna embarrass you in front of her or she embarrasses you in front of us. Either way, you’re doomed.”
“You think I don’t know that? I’ve seen how our parents and cousins act whenever someone brings their partner home.”
“Good. Then you remember how you’re usually at the forefront of the embarrassment coming from our family?” she says with an evil smirk.
“……”
You’re looking at her with a worried expression on your face.
“Oh fuck.”
“Yep. Good luck bud. You’re gonna need it!” she says, starting to walk away. “Now go get her! I’m pretty sure everyone’s excited to meet her already!” her evil smirk hasn’t left her face yet.
I am completely and utterly fucked. you think to yourself.
Outside the house, while waiting for her, you can’t help but contemplate what led you to this moment. You’re usually a smart guy, but you don’t know for the love of God why you decided to her home for the very first time during a big family gathering.
“Tito Ethan!” someone calls you from behind.
You look back and see one of your nieces running towards you at full speed.
“Ellie!” you yell back as you crouch down to catch her in your arms. “There you are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
“I was just changing my clothes because I spilled juice on it while playing earlier.”
“Well that tracks,” you chuckle. “So what are you doing out here?”
“I wanted to come see you! What are you doing out here anyway tito?”
“I’m just waiting for someone sweetie, want to wait with me?”
“Yes please!” she screams, jumping up and down.
