When someone answers your "looking for roommate" post.
bzzt bzzt. bzzt bzzt.
The sound of your phone rattling on your glass coffee table, waking you up from your lazy weekend nap. You pick up your phone to see that you have 2 missed calls, a voice mail, and a text from an unknown number.
The text read: “Hey, is this Alex by chance? I tried to give you a call but it shot to voicemail. I saw your ad that you’re looking for a roommate? Can you give me a text or call back when you get a chance?”
You rubbed the sleep from your eyes to make sure you were reading that right. You had put up an ad looking for a roommate months ago, and basically forgot about it. Your hand was forced to put up that post when the landlord raised the rent to meet comparable units in the area. You were originally grandfathered into an unbelievable lease until that point. The landlord even cut you a break on renewal, hinting that he has you at 10% below the rest of his other units. Perks of being a good tenant you suppose.
Regardless, the jump was a hefty one, and it had you putting up a post in an online group to help cover some of the costs. But with a recent promotion at work, you’ve been able to take on the rest of the rent, especially with a little effort to save some money.
You began to formulate your response: “Yup, it’s Alex. Sorry for the false hope! But due to some change in circumstances, I’m not looking for a roommate anymore. Thanks for reminding me to take the post down!” Send.
You parse through your phone to clear out your missed calls and voice mail notifications. Nothing worse than notifications that aren’t actually notifications. Missed Calls (2) - ###-###-####. Voicemail (1).
“Thank goodness voicemails don’t need us to dial into a mailbox anymore,” you think to yourself.
The voicemail began to auto-play before you could delete it. To be fair, you were expecting another tech bro looking to get their roots in the newly gentrified area. Instead, you were greeted on the other end of the phone by a soft, melodic, expressive, female voice which was laced with an Australian accent:
“Hey, is this Alex?~ I’m just calling about your post looking for a roommate? Give me a call back!”. You find your heart quickening at the sound of her gentle voice. The sound of her voice alone makes you start imagining how pretty of a face must be behind it.
The first question your logical mind asks, is whether this girl knows she was looking to be roommates with a guy? You technically did not specify in the posting, but your profile is quite clear that you were a guy. However, the curious part of your mind wonders whether this is something to pursue… Sure the money isn’t an issue anymore, but it wouldn’t necessarily hurt to have company. But what if the voice doesn’t match the face? Maybe you can convince her to meet?
Your mind starts to race at a hundred miles an hour, before typing out a text to take back what you said just minutes ago…
