At approximately 01418 hours, elements of Legio XII Fulminata stationed at Observation post Minerva spotted 14 unidentified persons moving along the Roman-Soviet frontier near hill 288. Visibility was limited due to fog and light rain.
Observers legionary’s Varus and Parmenian who were on the guard tower reported that said 14 persons were carrying Soviet patterned weapons and were moving southward from Soviet territory.
Post commander Tribunus Marcus Aelius Varro ordered a reconnaissance patrol from cohort III to be sent out and stop the group, known as Reconnaissance patrol Aquila .
0447hours
Reconnaissance patrol Aquila established visual contact with the group of 14 persons approximately 400 meters into the frontier on the Roman side.
0451 hours
Aquila legionary’s issued challenge procedures in Latin, Armenian and Russian.
No response received so Aquila continues pursuit.
0452 hours
group identified as Soviet personnel begin attempted withdrawal back to the Soviet side of the frontier, one of them discharged 14 rounds from a PKM.
patrol Aquila returns in kind with automatic rifle fire.
0452-0458 hours
Aquila engages in brief exchanges of small-arms fire and eliminates two Soviet personnel.
0459 hours
Aquila retrieves corpses of two deceased Soviet Spetsnaz commandos.
0461 hours
Spetsnaz squadron escapes back into Soviet territory, patrol Aquila ends pursuit.
Final assessment.
Soviet aggression against the Republic, this is the 4th time in a 7 week period such an incident has been reported along the Armenian frontier. Recommended action is counter- penetration missions into Soviet territory.
