I earned curious looks as I hauled Seulgi up my apartment complex. I covered her up with one of the coats I took from the vampires — the cleanest one I can find. Yet the smears of blood and the obvious fact that she was naked under the coat made me pray no one thought I was a creep abducting a really, really hot woman — because, let’s face it, Seulgi was hot.
I entered my room, fumbling with the keys — I wasn’t used to opening doors with someone on my back. Once I was inside, I made a mental note to clean up before the detective woke. My room was a disaster: books and notes scattered every where, empty noodle cups stacked in corners. Typical bachelor life, I guess — what else would you expect from a college guy living alone?
I trudged towards my bedroom and carefully laid the unconscious detective. And that was when it hit me — she was still naked underneath that coat. I scanned her body wrapped around the coat, she suddenly whimpered, a cute sound, like a bear cub — which would have remained cute if she did not shift in the bed, making the coat ride up her thighs and exposing parts one shouldn't see without permission. The room's temperature suddenly spikes up, from me or from Seulgi, I did not know. Impure thoughts started spinning around in my mind — because what would you expect from a college guy living alone?
Until I remembered she is a werebeast — and a freaking bear at that — impure thoughts would be the least of my worries if I did dare put my hands on her.
I left my room to resist the temptation that is Detective Kang Seulgi's body and decided to clean up my apartment as I think about what to do next. It just hit me as I was cleaning up — I survived a vampire attack. I shivered as I remembered their breaths upon my neck and wrists — then I got saved by a hot detective who was also a werebeast and what I would assume was a higher vampire named Bae Joohyun — although I think saving me was just a byproduct of their true intentions.
I remembered Joohyun's words, "Curiosities like him, someone resistant to vampiric charm is unheard of." What does she mean by resistant to vampiric charm? I think I was charmed by her alright — her silky, flowing black hair, her ethereal beauty, her cold eyes, the blood dribbling down her mouth to her chin — yep, I was indeed, charmed. But seriously speaking, I was indeed curious why the four vampire men were unable to charm me completely. It was my first time to actually encounter vampires so I'm not really one to judge about their success rates but Joohyun's words tell me that it is pretty high.
As I was lost in thought, I did not realized that I had finished cleaning up. I took a glass of water and sat down at the kitchen counter. I scanned my phone, looking for someone to talk to. Classmates' names popped up, but none of them would be serious enough to actually listen to me. Then at the tail end of my contact list, I saw one name, one name that might be able to understand what I just went through and help me process it all, the one person who might actually believe all this crazy shit — Yu Jimin.
For a long moment, I just stared at her name. I looked toward the bedroom. Seulgi’s breathing was steady now — almost peaceful. I exhaled, trying to shake the surrealness of it all. Vampires, werebeasts… and me, apparently immune to something that would cause the death of most people.
If anyone would believe me, it’d be her.
I just hoped she’d pick up — and I dialed her up.
It took a while before she did, "Hey, Seren. What's up? You don't... usually call," she greeted enthusiastically, then probably realizing that it's late and the fact that I really don't usually give calls, her tone changes slightly. "Everything okay? Or did you miss me already?" I smiled at her questions — of course she just had to sneak that cheeky bit in, I thought.
"Well, yeah. I'm still in one piece, more or less — and still human. And fine, I miss you, I'll say it just because I know you won't stop bugging me about it the whole call."
Jimin giggled cutely and I felt warmth fill my heart at the sound of it. "I hope I didn't call at a bad time, though," I said.
"Oh no. I just finished showering and was just about to change to my pajamas." Okay, that was too much information, I thought. I closed my eyes and the image of Jimin, fresh from the shower with only a bath robe or a towel on, water dripping down her — nope – nope — snap out of it, Vale — you don't need that imagery right now, especially when you have a naked werebeast lying unconscious in your bed.
"So, what did you call for, Seren?" Jimin asked from the other line.
"Well, promise me first you won't laugh or call me crazy."
"That depends but —"
"Jimin," I interrupted. "I'm serious this time, please."
Jimin's silence made me think that she is processing that I am indeed serious, and after a moment, "Alright, I promise I'll be a good friend and not laugh at you for now."
I took a deep breath and retold everything that happened after I dropped her off at her apartment.
After I finished, Jimin remained quiet on the other line for quite a long while. "Uhm. Jimin? You still there? You didn't sleep on me, did you?" I asked.
"How can I sleep on you with a story like that?" she replied. "Damn, Seren. You had a rough night. I told you it was not necessary for you to walk me home, look what happened."
"Hey. Don't blame yourself for this, I wanted to walk you home, I knew the risks if I was not home after dark. I just got — unlucky, I guess."
"Unlucky?!" Jimin said with concern in her voice. "You said those vampires couldn't resist your scent. You do know how long vampires can survive when they just fed, right?"
"Two weeks, give or take," I replied.
"Exactly, and they fed last night!"
"Woah, woah." I said, concerned over her rising voice. "I survived didn't I?"
"No thanks to you," Jimin replied, now clearly frustrated. "You got your ass saved by a werebeast and a higher vampire — which is frankly a more dangerous situation than four lesser vampires. And now you have the werebeast sleeping in your bed?!"
"She's not sleeping, she's unconscious —"
"Be serious, Seren," I can hear her heavy breathing across the phone.
"And a higher vampire has taken her interest in you? Called you what?"
"A curiosity—"
"For not falling for vampiric charm—"
"I think I was charmed —"
"Seren!"
I was stunned for a moment, Jimin usually doesn't raise her voice — like, ever.
"Sorry for worrying you, I... I shouldn't have called—"
"No, Seren, it's not that, I'm just —"
"Concerned, I know. Thank you, Jimin."
I can hear her breathing grow steadier from the other end. "So, what are you planning with the detective?"
I sighed loudly, "I don't know, yet. I'll figure it out when she wakes up. I do think she's not going to kill me though."
"Why? Cause she's a detective?"
"Yeah. Sworn to serve and protect and all that."
"Still, be careful, Seren," Jimin said softly. "And if you need anything, you can count on me."
"I will, thank you for listening, Jimin."
"Anytime just," she sighed. "Just be careful."
"I said I will.... mom."
She chuckled at the joke, "See you at class tomorrow, Seren."
"Yeah, see you. Good night, Jimin."
