Desperation can be a good thing... sometimes.
Life after college is a burden. Everyone’s struggling to look for a well-paying job as soon as they step down from the graduation stage after grabbing hold of their diplomas, trying to persuade their employers with whatever skill they have, and making sure they keep that job for as long as they can. You’re no different as you are also trying hard to land yourself a job, but it’s been more than a year since you graduated and still no luck.
You have a sister, who invited you to live in the city as soon as you graduated in which you happily accepted. You both thought that it’ll be much easier for you to find one in a big city than in the countryside but given your social skills, it would take a miracle before you get accepted in any kind of job. However, your sister doesn’t mind that you haven’t found a job yet as her work pays enough to cover herself, her son, and you on a daily basis; after all, she needs another hand in taking care of her child after her husband passed away.
Your phone then rings telling you that you just received a message after spending hours contemplating your life. It’s from your sister.
Old Sis 😈
Hey, bro? Can you pick up my son later? I think our meeting is getting delayed.
11:27 AM
You
Sure thing. When is he going to be out of daycare again?
11:29 AM
Old Sis 😈
Around 4PM.
Are you sure? Don’t you have plans for today?
11:30 AM
You
Sis, who am I gonna hang out with? It hasn’t been long since I came here.
11:31 AM
Old Sis 😈
“No dates?”
11:31 AM
You
Sis… -_-
11:32 AM
Old Sis 😈
Hehehe. I’m just playing with you.
Thanks, bro!
11:33 AM
You
No worries.
11:33 AM
Old Sis 😈
By the way, you can pick him up late if you want. He’ll just wait for you at the entrance like he usually does. Hehehe.
11:35 AM
You
Jeez. What a mother you are.
11:35 AM
Old Sis 😈
“Hey! >_< How rude.”
11:36 AM
You
Haha! Got you!
See you later.
11:37 AM
After your brief conversation with your sister, you realize that it’s been a while since you’ve settled yourself living in the city with your sister and her child, but you’re still not used to how busy everyone in the city here is. You mostly stay indoors and would only go out when really needed, like doing groceries and taking her son for a walk. Although you never liked kids, being with your nephew makes you think that taking care of kids isn’t that bad. Maybe it’s because he’s not as rowdy as the others of his age. He’s quiet, meek, and would rather lightly tug people to get their attention than yell and pull them to where they want to go. Either way, you and your nephew seem to understand each other and don’t give each other a hard time.
The daycare your nephew attends is part of a private school inside the city. It’s actually one of the most prestigious schools in the country, famous for its design and facilities that rival that of five-star hotels. You are always amazed by how beautiful is is every time you get the chance to go there. It’s unlike anything you have seen before.
You arrive at the daycare much later than usual. You expect that your nephew might have been waiting outside for a while now, but no one seems to be there. No parents, guardians, nor kids outside. Maybe they went home early and that he went back inside to wait, but you’re scared to go in and check. You’ve never actually been inside the daycare before, or even any nearer than 5 meters from the entrance, for that matter. This is new to you. You don’t know what to do.
After a few minutes of hesitation, you walk towards the entrance to the daycare. But you stop in your tracks the moment you notice a lady at the counter inside, busy writing papers at her desk, through the glass window that you decide to just stop and stand just by the door outside. She then notices you as you uncomfortably stand outside, looking suspicious. She waves at you, trying to be helpful and get your attention, yet you pretend you didn’t notice her out of being too nervous as you try to look away and out into the street across. She waves at you several times but you still don’t want to interact with her. Out of options, the lady gets up on her desk and walks towards the glass window. She taps it a couple of times, which you finally decide to acknowledge. Feeling relieved, she signals you to come in.
Despite the small confusion, you both greet each other with simple hellos the moment the door opens.
“Sorry about that. I thought I couldn’t get inside.”
She laughs. “It’s okay. First time?”
“No. Actually I’ve been here a few times to fetch my nephew, but I’ve only been outside before.”
“Oh. So are you here to take your nephew home?”
“Uhmm, yes, actually. But he usually waits outside. Do you know where he is?”
“Ah! Then you must be talking about the reporter’s child!”
“Yes. That would be him.”
“Then you’re his mom’s brother. Correct?”
“Yeah. I am his mom’s younger brother.”
“Oh how lovely to meet you, sir! I’m Soonkyu.”
“Uhmm. Happy to meet you too, Soonkyu…”
Soonkyu offers you a handshake that you happily oblige, but your unfamiliarity with the situation renders you unable to respond with an introduction of your own. You can only reply in nervous smiles and stuttered laughs. She catches onto your uneasiness quickly so she invites you to sit down and starts some small talk.
“So, uhmm… Sir?”
“Uhh… Yeah! Yeah. That would be fine.”
“Did your sister not tell you that the kids are preparing for a play?”
“A play?”
Suddenly, your phone starts to ring. It’s your sister calling.
“Hello?”
“Sis.”
“Oh, hey! Are you at the daycare already?”
“Yes. They were telling me that the kids are participating in a play?”
“Ah, yeah! I forgot to tell you about that earlier. Oops!”
“I guess that’s what you get from getting older, huh?”
“Hey! I have so many things to think about, you know?”
“Hehe. Got ya again. That’s twice now.”
“Quit it! Hmph!”
“So what’s it about?”
“Ah, right. They told me earlier this morning that it’s for a project they gave the kids before they let them go on a break.”
“I see.”
“I’m really sorry I haven’t told you earlier, bro.”
“Don’t sweat it, sis. It’s fine. I’ll just wait for them to finish.”
“Oh thank you so much, bro! You know what? I’m gonna treat you to some grilled pork tonight!”
“That sounds great! Looking forward to it.”
“Alright. I need to go back to the meeting. I only told them that I’ll be going on a bathroom break.”
“Seriously? So much for a professional to be making silly excuses.”
“Stop it…”
“Hehe. Just kidding.”
“Well then. Catch you two boys later. Bye!”
“Yeah. See you later.”
The call ends. Everything is clear to you now, albeit a bit late.
“Is that your sister? The reporter?”
“Uhmm, yeah.”
“Guess you’ll have to wait a while, sir.”
“It’s fine. I can wait.”
“Don’t you want to watch them practice?”
“I… I can?”
“Yeah! We let the parents and guardians supervise their kids regularly.”
“I see.”
“Although you’re the only one with us today. I guess that’s what the first day of the week does to busy people, right?
"Ah… right.”
“Anyway. Please follow me, sir!”
Soonkyu calls their faculty office for someone who can man the counter while she’s gone. She then guides you to the school gymnasium where your nephew is busy rehearsing for his play. As you walk inside the school’s beautiful hallways, she also gives you a tour of what the school has in store—the classrooms, the cafeteria, the lounge areas scattered all around—that could really be mistaken for fancy hotel rooms and amenities. You already thought that this school is extraordinary with it’s beautiful architecture, but walking around the place just proves your assumptions correct. You can only imagine how hard your sister works just to have her son attend such a prestigious academy.
You and Soonkyu have only been walking for several minutes, but rather than gazing at the school’s beautiful features she is showcasing in her impromptu tour of the facility, it didn’t take you long for you to be amazed at her hips that were previously obscured from your view with her apron. How her ass sways like a pendulum with every step puts you in a trance that makes you unconsciously pitch a tent underneath your pants. But you start to notice the bulge as it obstructs your movement, causing you to walk weird. So you try to calm it down before she could turn her head back to you as she continues to talk to you through the school’s many features, most of which you didn’t pay attention to.
“Here we are!” Soonkyu stops in front of a double sliding door after moments of walking. “The school auditorium.”
“This is the school auditorium—wait. This school has its own auditorium?”
“Yeah! Pretty cool, isn’t it?”
“Cool’s one way of saying it.”
“Come on! Let’s go inside,” she invites you to enter as she slides the door open, showing a large yet dimly lit room.
“Wow. What a huge place,” you gasp.
“I know, right? It’s as big as the cinema auditoriums at malls.”
“Amazing.”
“They actually hold movie screenings here sometimes.”
