Gosh, how do I even begin talking about a work by one of the best authors I’ve ever had the joy of reading?
Okay maybe that’s too much boing boing bouncing. Boing boing.
Regardless, I think this is my personal favourite work from major. I remember saying this about her works once, when I first debuted as a writer. Major does a great job of packaging emotions into her works, and that to me is this fic. Just a perfect example of exactly that.
If you’ve never read embee before (wtf are u doin btw), this might be a good starting point. This or maybe her work with Miyeon. And her style is all this: stream-of-consciousness prose, pretty and precise diction, where every detail betrays what each character is feeling. Her pen is precise. Simple words in the correct orientation. Scenes last long enough to get the point across, not any longer. She bends the world around her towards the narrative, using details and small things that others don’t even notice.
And she’s an expert. I don’t really gush over how good of a writer she is, because just simply asking, right now, who agrees? This paragraph will light up with comments.
The plot is simple. It’s been done before. It’s been replicated. But I don’t know if I’ll ever see another one done this exact way. Done so poignantly, done so crushingly well. She writes the kind of fics that rewire your brain, and that’s a talent you can only be grateful you get to witness.
I know I sound like I’m worshipping a god, but this is the style of writing that personally appeals the most to me. The ones that make you feel something. That maybe you don’t remember in lines but you remember in feeling. My own style is in some sense derived from hers.
And I could easily blabber on and on about every single scene and line, but the truth is I’ve already done that, so you may as well give the fic a read yourself and you’ll see me gushing in the inlines.
I don’t want to go off on some incoherent tangent. So I’ll summarise before I just start talking about everything. Incredible fic. Personal favourite. Hits emotional beats with a goddamn monster truck travelling at 200mph, prose smooth as whiskey, and everything done with polish and glitter. The fic is legendary, and the author may as well be celestial. I’ll put people at gunpoint and force them to read this. It’s really that good, and I don’t want to spoil a single line of the journey.
Now go read the fic, bitch.
