It’s time I talked about something like this.
I don’t know if this is gonna be a thing, whether I should turn this into a proper series, but I hope doing this will get someone to listen. Because there are fics on this platform that deserve conversation, praise.
So here’s my first try at Basically Bite-Sized. First up? Azelfty’s A Life Worth Living. I have so, so much to gush about this fic. It might be the best fic I’ve read this year. It’s special. There comes certain times when you read something so impactful, so striking and distinct, something that’s more than insight, something that goes beyond just being a fic to deliver something unforgettable.
And that’s this fic. I’m lucky to be able to read this. Worldbuilding. Details. A wholly formed universe in about a couple hundred words of exposition and built on the emotions of grief and loss that anchor it. The muddiness, the intentional kind, the one that asks more questions that it answers. Az never gives you enough, exploring Yunjin’s time in a dystopian future that seems almost like a meta-narrative. Tugs you along with a tight grip by never giving enough for you to fully understand, to make you hunger.
Yunjin is subject to her own agency, each discovery- the next plot points- landing subtly before exerting their full weight. This is expert storytelling. This is meticulous planning. And all this laced with human characters that you can’t help sharing in their instinct to simply survive.
I urge you to give this a shot. It’s not something for you to goon to. It’s not just words on a page. This deserves a proper read, where you’re seated somewhere comfortable and ready to just immerse for a good half hour. This fic says something. And Az does it in such a poignant way it left me in awe the first time I worked through it.
It says something when I just forget that this is a prompt submission, breaks me from simply scanning text to realise that this actually means. This is more than fic. And it’s beautiful.
