So you know how we all cringe at characters, especially FMCs, who say they can "fix" or "change" their love interests (who are, for the most part, toxic scumbags) only for them to be hurt and broken by their LIs?
Well, what if I told you there are some characters who actually succeeded in changing their LIs and I have a couple of characters that come to mind.
Disclaimer: these are my opinions and are prone to being biased.
Let's get into it.
4. Lisa Tepes (Castlevania)
Who is her husband:
Dracula Vlad Tepes: Vampire Lord. Kept mostly to himself in his floating palace and never really interacted with humans for centuries.
Then we have Lisa pulling up to his crib asking for knowledge about medicine to help human and spend more time with him, and that was enough for Dracula to be like: this one.
She singlehandedly got this centuries-old vampire to have hope in humanity and got him to travel around the world.
The reason why I put her at number 4 is coz Dracula ended up turning against humanity the moment these mutha fuckas burned her to the stake. But his crash-out was valid. Coz this woman was out here trying to help people with medicine and science, only for her to be accused of witchcraft and had her cooked and burnt LITERALLY..
Dracula was generous enough to give these mofos a year to bring him the people who killed his beloved, and these mofos chose to have a parade on the day they killed Lisa, and they were shocked when Dracula pulled up with his army of night creatures and massacred the whole city? Nah fam.
3. Gwen Tennyson (Ben 10 Alien Force-Omniverse)
Who is her man:
Kevin Levin. Ben's nemesis since they were 10-11 years. Was sent to the null void until he got out and met Ben and Gwen when they were teens to get his revenge, until he got his ass beat and ended up joining them and became one of the good guys.
Now listen, Gwen and Kevin being together wasn't on my bingo list when I watched Ben 10 Alien Force as a kid, but I wasn't complaining. Matter of fact, Kevin and Gwen CARRIED the entirety of Ben 10 Alien Force to Ultimate Alien. I could argue that they were the healthiest couple in this show.
These two were supportive of each other. Gwen was arguably the only person who believed in him. She worked her ass off to try to undo the damage the Omnitrix did to him when he and Ben were tampering with it. She encouraged him to go back to school because she saw how smart he was and had potential if he applied himself. And when he was in his mutated form and went crazy, Ben was ready to put him down. Ben saw no hope for Kevin and was beyond saving, even though these two became the best of best friends.
But not Gwen. She still believed in her man and was willing to fight to get him back, even when he was absorbing her power. Why? Because he brought her back and snapped her out of being consumed by her anodite powers when she first transformed. He even opened a motor shop near her college so he could stay close to her. Come on now.
2. Aoi Sakamato (Sakamoto Days)
Who is her husband:
Taro Sakamoto. Legendary assassin and hitman. Killed without hesitation or remorse. You wanna kill him? Be sure to clear your browser history and write up yo will coz you will be dead before you even point a gun or lift a knife at this mutha fucka. And this guy was in THE ORDER!
But the moment this deadly assassin set eyes on the convenience store owner, that was it for him.
This man gave up being an assassin for HER, married her, had a daughter with her and owns a convenience store with HER.
Even when his assassin life was starting to catch up to him, he never once killed anyone.
Why? Because our girl made him promise to not kill people if he wanted to be with her.
Sakamoto ain't afraid of anything EXCEPT his wife.
And you're wondering: what could this woman possibly do to instill fear in THE Taro Sakamoto?
Divorce. That's enough to scare him. Why? Coz he doesn't want to live his life without her and his daughter.
Okay, so she managed to domesticate an assassin and hitman. Big whoop.
Yes, but she didn't just make him a husband. She CHANGED his perspective.
Remember this man KILLED people without hesitation, without a care or regard for their lives because that was his job. But she made him see the value of human life. And because of that, he started to care for people. He cares for Shin, Lu and Heisuke and would do anything to protect them. Give Aoi her flowers, please and thank you.
1. Bulma Briefs (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball Daima)
The one. The only. The legend. The blueprint. The reason I made this post. The OG: Bulma Briefs.
Who is her husband:
Vegeta. Prince of all Saiyans. Formerly affiliated with Frieza, aka space Hitler and the mutha fucka who nuked his entire race. This man used to kill people, enslave planets, and DESTROY planets while he was under Frieza.
This man cared more about his Saiyan pride than the lives and safety of people around and will switch up on you the moment you bribe him with power and stroke his Saiyan ego even if it back fires on him and it HAS HAPPENED THREE SEPARATE TIMES (allowing Cell to absorb Android 18, the fake saiyan restoration kingdom in the non canon broly movie and the majin vegeta thing during the majin but saga)
So when it was revealed by future Trunks WHO his parents are my 11-year-old ass stared at the TV like: how?!
I honestly thought that she was going to end up with Yamcha since these two were day ones. So how did we get here?
Before she became CEO, she was a rich, spoiled nepo baby despite being one of the smartest women in Dragon Ball. But she was a brat. Not the typa woman I'd imagine Vegeta to be like: that one. And have not one but TWO kids with.
Vegeta even acknowledged that she's a feisty woman but that's what he likes about her and that saiyans are naturally drawn and attracted to strong willed women (in Dragon Ball Super)
But going back to DBZ, we're at the point where Vegeta was slowly in his redemption arc. Vegeta was still Vegeta, but he was aligned with the Z warriors. But he also wanted to surpass Goku.
Bulma happens to have the facilities for him to train and become stronger. So why not take advantage that.
Vegeta gets hurt severely. Bulma helps him recover. She screams at him when he goes back to training barely recovered.
I honestly thought the only reason ended up sticking with Bulma was coz of Trunks. But that was until the Buu saga.
This man, even when he became Majin Vegeta, thought about Bulma and his son when he nuked himself in an attempt to beat Buu.
This man despite being afraid of Beerus, crashed the fuck out on him when he slapped Bulma like: YOU DO NOT TOUCH MY WIFE.
This man skipped sparring with Goku just so he could be present when Bulma was pregnant with with Bulla.
This man gave turns when Bulma threatened not to share the tub with him for as long as she lived.
She not only domesticated the prince of all saiyans, she furthered his redemption arc and made him step up as a father.
On top of that, she wished to be married to a prince. AND SHE DID.
She didn’t just fix him — she gave him the humanity he didn’t know he needed. We gotta put respect on her name.
Aya (Green Lantern: The Animated Series)
Who is her man:
Razer. Former red lantern. Became a blue lantern. Currently a red and blue lantern (Young Justice). Became a red lantern after his wife Ilana was killed and later found out that Atrocidus was responsible for his wife's death.
Razer (to me) was kinda like a blend of Kevin and Vegeta in the sense that like Kevin, he was part of the bad guys, got his ass beat and joined the good guys and like Vegeta, he was slowly walking on the path of redemption until Aya helped with his character growth while she, as a machine, was learning how to feel emotions. And much like Gwen, she never saw or believed him to be evil.
What makes it kinda complicated is that Aya started off as an AI without a physical body. But when she did end up having a body, she took up the appearance of Razer's dead wife.
We see these two grow closer. They almost kissed.
Razer even confessed to Ilana that he loved her when she got blasted by a manhunter and supposedly died but she survived. And when she confronted him about it, this absolute fool was like: You're mistaken. It was a spur of the moment and was meant for my wife. You're a machine. You can't feel anything. So I can never love you.
Razer. Baby. WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU DOING GETTING CLOSE AND ALMOST KISSING HER FOR?! THAT OBVIOUSLY MEANS THAT YOU WERE CATCHING FEELINGS FOR HOME GIRL!
Anyway, so Aya was hurt but since the ho is a machine, she was struggling with feeling emotional pain and asked Hal for advice. He didn't really give her much since a fleet of manhunters was on they asses.
So she asked Razer and was like, "Just shut down your emotions."
And that’s what she did. She blew up the anti-monitor's head off, merged with it, took control of the manhunters and turned evil.
And I kid you not, it took this bitch turning into a heartless and emotionless terminator for him to realise he fucked up and lied to himself about not loving her.
Eventually, she did turn back to normal and they acknowledged their feelings but Aya had to transfer a virus to kill the manhunters INCLUDING HERSELF.
She turns into sparks. Now Razer is on a mission to find Aya.
What makes Aya a successful fixer is that she, a literal machine with no concept of feelings or humanity, ironically, ends up being the one to teach him compassion, patience, and vulnerability. She mirrors his pain, his confusion, and his desire for meaning beyond anger while he teaches her how to feel; she teaches him how to heal.
That’s the difference between them and the other “Fixer” couples — they fix each other.
Aya didn’t just soften Razer; she gave him a purpose beyond revenge. She challenged his rage, forced him to confront what he’d buried, and proved that even a creature born of code could understand love better than he could.
While Razer, shows, teaches and helps Aya understand emotions and make sense of them from his own experience.
I think the reason he said what he said about never loving her just coz she's a machine is because at the time before realising and coming to terms with his feelings for Aya, he was still holding on to his dead wife Ilana. And it didn't help that Aya was the spitting image of his dead wife. So I can imagine how confusing it was for him when it came to his feelings for Aya: did he see her as herself or see her as his dead wife?
She kinda tops Lisa coz Dracula was so consumed by his anger and grief that he was willing to wipe out humanity, and he completely forgot that Alucard, his son, was there. He still had a piece of Lisa with him.
Razer, even though he lost Aya, had hope. It was his hope that kept him pushing and fighting for Aya when she shut down her emotions. It's his hope that he's on his mission to find her. He could have given up and accepted that Aya was gone forever but he didn't.
Aya didn’t just fix him. She upgraded his soul.
