I believe this is a good time to address this, but many of you have probably noticed my stories have been getting these weird notation artifacts in my last couple of stories. Well, there is a good reason for that. I have switched the word processor that I write all my stories on from Grammarly to Zoho Writer. The reason being that Grammarly has been slowly being overtaken by using AI models and LLMs as opposed to being just a writing software, and so I would like to take the time to just kinda hash out my perspectives and views on AI (spoiler: it's not positive)
First, some background. I personally suffer from the three main versions of Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, and Dysgraphia, or however you spell those words. I have also been diagnosed with (at the time of diagnosis) Asperger’s, but most people call that Level 1 Autism, so for me self expression (especially through writing has been a massive hurdle. So I heavily rely on spell checks and Grammar checkers like Grammarly and similar sites to write my stories in. The issue is that much of the software I use has been overtaken by Artificial Intelligence models and LLMs. So the quality of those systems has gone down considerably since I started writing. which sucks for me across the board because instead of using "Proper English," they refer to "Common English," which is just fancy vernacular for saying they don't use the proper terms and structure and will defer to the most common versions of how things are said. This is important because I also use writing these stories as a means to keep my literacy up. I haven't really read many books in the last few years that weren't comics or manga in my personal life because I have to read paperwork for my real life job (and Lots of it). So using the software like Grammarly is hurting rather than helping me. (hence the switch to Zoho) I hope Zoho doesn't become infested with AI, but it's just that wild hope. which leads me into my main point of writing this blog post.
Screw you, AI especially the main one, ChatGPT. You have irrecoverably changed the data and information landscape, and not for the better. I won't go so far as to say you have made people dumber because people don't need the help, and that was happening regardless, but I will say this. The damage you have done to people's processing and ability to engage has been nothing short of reductive and negative at best. However, the success of your model has been so wide and pervasive that everyone is racing to catch and integrate their "products" with you, and I am furious about it. Word, Google Docs, WPS Office, and now Grammarly have all instituted AI in their systems, and as a result, those systems have become demonstrably worse, and I can’t opt out, so I am forced to find even further and further niche processors to write and manage my writing, and I hate it. It's stupid, and I hate it, but what can you do?
That's all, I guess. Have a good day, and don't beat yourself up because you think your writing is bad. Just keep up writing, and you'll get there.
