Overture

Hey all,

Have you ever been listening to a song and had to stop what you're doing to run it back or focus on it because it just hit you right?

I’ve had this idea for a while, and I was going to make a challenge or prompt out of this but for now I'll keep it here, where I write stories based on song lyrics.

I listen to music almost all day every day, I've got lyrics tattooed on me, I play music, and even more than writing or reading, music defines me more than I care to admit. I have songs that I think of when I see particular people, go particular places, I've got songs that I can't listen to anymore because they're so intricately tied to moments in my life just because I listened to them at that point in time.

Now since I've started writing a little I find myself picking out lines in songs and thinking “wow I wonder what the story behind that was, I wonder if I could do something with that.”

Songs are usually so open to interpretation and able to be used universally for a number of reasons, that I've been thinking it would be interesting to take a single line or lyric from a piece of music and turn into a story that shows how I (or you, but we'll get to that) think about that song and how it makes you feel.

Couple that idea with the fact that this site gives a fantastic sense of community, and I want to get to know you all a little more. A little :)

So, if you could, and only if you want to, feel free to send me a letter or comment on this post with a lyric that means something to you or hits you a certain way. I was going to do this the other way round and give out lyrics for people to write to but I need the writing practice and that seems like a lot of effort (for now). Don't ask me how handing out lyrics is more effort than writing fics about them but that's just the way my mind works.

As mentioned, this is mostly just writing practice for me, and a way for us to connect a little. If it hits me the right way too, I'll use that inspiration you've gifted me to write a short fic on what it made me think about.

To be clear, I do not guarantee ever writing about all of these (especially if it gets out of hand), I don't guarantee a timeframe, particular length of fic or even quality. It would mostly be relatively short form prose but it could write a poem, a single paragraph, a fucking picture, who knows. Also if the music means a lot to you, I might interpret it in a completely different way and butcher your favourite song, so BE CAREFUL.

There is also the possibility that if you like the idea or an idea someone posts that you could write a piece yourself based on that and I could add you as a co author to this series for a chapter of your own. That, however, is bordering the realm of making this an official challenge that people can contribute to. If this blows up for whatever reason, we may go down that path but that seems unlikely at this stage.

I am working on chapter one currently and will be a little thing, out soon™ .

Don't go looking for ‘cool’ lyrics or try too hard, just send me something that resonates with you. If you'd like to explain the lyrics or your reasons, request a particular character (idol normally), or just get something off your chest anonymously, feel free to send me a letter.
