“How good are you?”
“Huh?”
“I said,” Minju says. “How good are you?” as she leans on your door frame, pointing at your monitor’s screen.
“Why do you wanna know?” you ask, flexing your wrists, taking a quick glance at your monitor and pressing the B button on your keyboard.
“I dunno,” she replies, entering your room and taking a seat on your bed. “Thought it’d be a fun thing to learn today.”
You spin your chair around to face her as you click the portal. “Are you that bored?”
“What gave it away?” She says as she leans back, hands spread across the bed behind her as she splays her legs. “I can’t go home because Iroha asked me to crash some place else.”
“So you decided to bother me.”
“Is there anyone else in your apartment to talk to?” she retorts, letting out a huff. “I can’t even ask her to come pick me up because she’s probably binge watching Frozen right now.”
“Is that why you asked that?” You take your headset off, placing it next to your keyboard. “Mandu is too bored to anything else?”
“Duh.” She’s playing with her hair now, humming a random tune to herself.
“Well, the game takes the boredom away,” you respond, stretching into your chair. “Why else do you think I play this game?”
“Beats me, maybe you just like losing,” Minju answers. “and then I come flying in, ready to save your ranked climb.”
“Minju,” you sigh. “If you wanted to duo, you could’ve just asked. I thought you knew I had a spare setup.”
“Well, first off” as she raises a finger up. I didn’t want to impose on your gaming session. Second” Another finger straightens. “I was comfortable in your beanbag chair. And third–” Minju raises her middle finger. “Where is it?”
She makes a point to look around for your spare PC. “I’ll make sure to carry you out of Plat.”
With a shake of your head, you get out of your chair and set up your previous PC, keyboard, and mouse right next to your own.
“So,” you say, as you sit back down. “What do you want me to play?”
“Enchanter support.”
“No, most definitely not.”
“Why not?” Her pout sparks a weird thought in your head, that you have obviously never thought of before, as it suddenly hits you how ethereal she looks sitting beside you.
“Well, just chill while I finish my game.”
Unsurprisingly, she gets bored again and starts poking you in the side.
“Stop, Minju, I’m busy–” as you pentakill the enemy team with Lillia’s sleep combo. “With my game. That you so rudely interrupted.”
“Fine.”
A few minutes later…
The queue pops, and the draft begins.
It’s Jarvan, Karma, Miss Fortune, Katarina, and Ornn
vs
Nidalee, Janna, Jhin, Lux, and Darius for the enemy team.
As you wait for the loading screen’s bar to pass ninety percent, she pokes you again.
You shift in your seat finding her expectant eyes. After holding eye contact for a few seconds she says, “Gank me, ok?”
Your role is simple in theory, just PvE into ruin someone’s day and repeat, but as always in life, it’s not as easy as it seems, especially in League.
The room becomes silent except for the clicking of keys as both of you focus on clearing camps and csing respectively. Your mind goes blank as you clear your red side jungle and move to sit in the long mid lane bush.
Then, you materialize in her lane before the Lux can react.
One ping, and one flag and drag later, and the kill is secured when she follows your lead without hesitation, and the kill goes to her.
"Told you," she says, and you can see her elated smile.
The mid game bleeds into constant fights.
A fight in the river for soul point, outnumbered four to three. You win the smite fight and she's already moving to hunt down the Jhin.
Then she gets caught, greeding for the bot wave.
You already cancel your base before you even realize it, peeling her back before the fight escalates.
"Don't do that to me ever again," you mutter.
She laughs and pats you on the back.
When the late game arrives, both teams meet for the most important fight. Infernal Soul could decide everything. You and Minju move in sync, diving right onto the backline and before they can react. The fight is over almost as soon as it starts.
At the Elder dragon, it’s a clean ace with you and Minju bursting the backline and ending the game mid.
And as your champion hits the nexus, you can’t stop yourself from thinking:
You’ll be queueing again and again all night long.
