I think one of the truly hardest things as a storyteller (in any medium, be that as a writer, filmmaker etc.) is learning to trust your audience. Sometimes, you feel strongly enough about your message that you want to hover behind them and explain everything - not necessarily because you don’t trust their intellect but because you don’t trust your own skill to communicate your vision. Even though I live and die by the whole ‘show not tell’ adage, I still struggle with that a lot, to be honest. That urge to grab the readers’ hand and go, “do you see what I see?” is overwhelming, especially when it’s an idea you’ve put an inordinate amount of thought into. Which is why I think engagement is so rewarding for authors, which this site encourages! It helps one trust their own hand.
